Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Hugus.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We opened our doors in September 2018 and it has been a wild ride ever since! We have grown from 11 amazing humans on our team to over 40 today. Originally taproom only with a wood-fired pizza menu, we have expanded to brew and distribute beer across all of the Northland of Minnesota, in the Twin Cities metro, and northern Wisconsin.
We proudly create over 100 unique beers per year in the taproom and host a variety of community-centric events.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Again, I feel like I could write a book on this one question. Our young company has seen its fair share of adversity ranging from COVID-19 to a fire that almost consumed the whole taproom in 2020 back to major leadership shakeups.
It hasn’t been an easy road for us, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Each time we face an obstacle we find a way to come through it better and stronger than before and it makes us more resilient as a company. Our current team is incredible and we wouldn’t be able to keep facing and navigating these challenges without an amazing team.
We’ve been impressed with Ursa Minor Brewing, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are most proud of our variety of beers and our continual focus on inclusivity as we approach making new products for our customers.
We use beer and pizza among other things as our tools to bring people together and foster real, authentic human connection.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
We love living here in Duluth. It is an amazing place to live, explore, and raise a family. This amazing lake we have the privilege to live by and enjoy constantly is unique and incredible.
