Today we’d like to introduce you to Scotty Davis.
Hi Scotty, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in the Lakes area has been great. Like everyone else, I needed a job. I started doing dock and lift service with my Uncle and his friend when I was in high school.
After high school, I worked for a lawn care company that provided dock service as well. I was fortunate enough that the lawn care provider let me purchase his dock accounts so he could focus on lawn care. That is when I officially started our dock service company. From there, the company grew from 50 accounts to several hundred. We gained a couple of full-time employees and started upgrading equipment.
Around the same time (2014) I purchased a local party rental company. “Area Lakes Party Rental” At the time they had a few tables and chairs and small tents. Every year since we have invested back into the business. Growing our inventory and our service area. We are now able to accommodate weddings of up to 500 guests.
In the last few years, the dock business took off. We invested in our first hydraulic fork barge. (2019) We purchased our 2nd in (2020). After feeling like the dock service business was at capacity we felt like there was still something missing. I still had our main office in a spare bedroom of my house. We decided to purchase an office building in Battle Lake. (2021)
In the fall of 2022, we quickly realized we needed more space as we wanted to transition some of our focus into sales.
Coming into the 2023 spring season we are very excited about our purchase of NBL Marine and Northstar dock and lift. Becoming a floe and porta-dock dealer was an important step in growing the company. We can now provide a more complete experience to our customers with storage and marine mechanic work at our NBL location.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Finding enough quality help has always been a struggle of ours. In our small community, there simply is not enough a large enough workforce.
The number of hours put into building the company is hard. Choosing work over family events takes a toll on everyone.

Our business specializes in taking care of the lakeside needs of people who have lake places around the Battle Lake Area. We started with Annual Dock and Lift installation and removal. That is the main part of our business.

With our new marine side to the business, we are now offering a new exciting list of services. Boat and pontoon winterization and seasonal storage. Marine mechanic service. Full line of rental pontoons. We are known for having a high quality of service and good communication.
We are very proud of the brand we sell. Both Porta-Dock and Floe are top-tier docks and lift manufacturers. We can provide a dock or lift for every scenario in the lakes area.
What’s next?
Not on the business side I am getting married to my best friend Lacey this June! We celebrated our daughter’s first birthday recently.
With our recent purchase of NBL Marine, we are going to be very busy! Our future plans are to take everything we do and do it better. Making everything efficient is going to be very important.
Our biggest change in the near future is a re-brand. Combining Scott Davis Docks & Lifts, NBL Marine, and Northstar Dock and Lift into one new name.
