Meet Makenna Cook of Entirely Bonkers Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makenna Cook.

Hi Makenna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I grew up competitively dancing, writing, and training and performing in a youth circus. Storytelling was always a big part of my life, personality, and overall a strong passion of mine.

After graduating college with my bachelor’s in journalism, I knew I wanted to help tell stories but I didn’t want to be a journalist. I decided to try copywriting as a side gig, but after reaching out and marketing my services to multiple local businesses I realized that more businesses needed help with socials than copywriting. So I switched gears and learned everything I could find on the internet about social media management.

In high school, I spent most of my time working at both a local coffee shop and a local restaurant. Through those experiences, I met a lot of entrepreneurs and got to know their stories. After graduating and thinking about what kind of people I loved being around and what kind of people I wanted to surround myself with, it was always other entrepreneurs.

So offering social media management to entrepreneurs and business owners just seemed like the way to go.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. I started this journey at 20 years old, right out of graduating college, with no corporate work experience under my belt.

When you first start a business or start anything new for that matter you have to learn to get out of your head. When I started, I was teaching myself nearly everything on the fly through Youtube, blog articles, and TikTok. I would have lots of days or weeks where I just felt like a crazy person for trying to start and scale a business at such a young age. No one else my age could understand or relate.

As I was still learning social media management in my first few months, there were mistakes of course (because how else do you learn). It was challenging to remind myself that mistakes are a good thing and that no one is going to think less of you because you are just getting started and learning.

My business is just about a year old now, and since then I’ve grown exponentially in my social media skills as well as the skills it takes to run a business, but what it took was learning how my brain works and how to overcome that imposter syndrome which meant a lot of confidence building.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Entirely Bonkers Media Co?
Entirely Bonkers Media Co works to meet business owners where they are at on their social media marketing and management journey and supply the tools to get them where they want to be. We do this through full social media management (content creation, content scheduling, and social media engagement), content creation (going on-site and shooting content for you to post on your socials), and various levels of social media coaching.

I specialize in working with business owners and entrepreneurs who want to learn social media management skills but just have no idea where to start. A lot of business owners come to me feeling like they missed the boat on marketing their business via socials, or that they’re too old, or not tech-savvy enough to build their social media presence to where they want it to be.

To that I say, anyone can learn. Anyone can market their business on socials with the right tools and right support. My coaching sessions give business owners the opportunity to take risks and leap with their social media while learning the ins- and – outs of social media platforms and management practices.

I think what sets me apart from others is that I give business owners the option to learn at their own pace and tackle their social media fears.

At the start of this year, I rebranded my business, I wanted it to feel real and true to me and who I am. Especially because authenticity is so important on social media and that’s something I preach to my clients all the time.

The idea of Entirely Bonkers Media Co came to me in the fall of 2022. Growing up, Alice in Wonderland had always been a story that was very close to my heart for many reasons. I’d always really loved the wonder, wackiness, and whimsicalness of it all. In the lens of social media, the Alice in Wonderland connection seemed like a no-brainer.

Social media is wacky and ever-changing. It can feel overwhelming, and otherworldly, but with the right guides and help along the way it truly can be magical and wondrous.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think starting this business in itself was a huge risk. I had just graduated college with my bachelor’s at 19 years old.

I had gotten a job working with DeafBlind kids in a Twin Cities school district and I loved it but I knew that a 9-5 lifestyle wasn’t going to give me the time, and mental and emotional space I needed to grow and become the person I wanted to be. I started this as a side hustle in January 2022 as a copywriter. I threw every little bit of time I had at it. By September, I had switched over to social media management and quit my 9-5 to go full-time in this business.

I told myself that if I wasn’t making as much money as I was at my 9-5 by December of 2022 I’d go back to my 9-5, but I hit that number by October.

I would say that nearly all decisions you make when you first start your business are a risk. Especially when you’re straight out of college and don’t have as much life experience as other entrepreneurs.
