Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Daly.
Hi Rebecca, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Java River was founded in August 1998. We bought Java in August 2016 and are the 5th owner. My kids were growing up and working nights as a server and bartending didn’t make sense anymore. Looking for a change of pace and something my kids could be involved in led me to Java River. I had been living in Montevideo for about 7 years and had rarely visited the quaint little shop.
Spending time there, meeting the staff and more locals was truly life-changing. A veil was lifted as I experienced art, music, coffee, food, and comradery that I hadn’t experienced before in our rural community. I was hooked! After learning it was for sale, it was a no-brainer. We have been happily brewing ever since.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Java River had some growing to do and a lot for me to learn. I’ve been getting educated on the world of coffee as well as business ownership. There has been some trial and error in figuring out what people want, really understanding our niche in the community, and expanding to everyone.
There are some misconceptions about Java River from previous owners and we’ve had to work hard to shine a fresh light on what we’re doing.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Java River Coffee Shop. We are a small business coffee shop located on the main street in downtown Montevideo for the last 25 years. We specialize in coffee and coffee-related beverages featuring local roasters. We are also known for being a meeting place for the town. We have paninis and burgers made with Knutson Farms Beef located about 5 minutes out of town.
We have an outdoor Courtyard where we host Live Music throughout the summer as well as private parties. It houses The Shinto Cowboy stage and a beautiful little waterfall you can enjoy while you snack on our homemade baked goods or a sausage gravy-smothered breakfast burrito if you are looking to take in something a little more filling. We have 2 units in our indoor space that consists of a (coming up on) 100-year-old bar and bar stools and a cozy room with a fireplace to get you through the winter. We live and breathe locally as well as we can manage and have made many long-lasting connections along the way.
We have been told we are one of the heartbeats of the artists and arts of the town. We enjoy making fools of ourselves while also delivering you an experience you’ll want to brag about. The main thing that sets us apart is the sundry of friends, family, and patrons that you will encounter when you visit.
What matters most to you?
The very essence of Java River is a love of family and community. Making and nurturing personal relationships is the most important aspect of what we do. We pride ourselves on being friendly and approachable. When we ask you how you’re doing, we care.
Our family and our “Java Family” (staff and regulars) are a close group that is always excited to meet new people and strike up a friendly conversation. We have exceptional coffee, delectable baked goods, and a creative, well-executed menu but, the people are the heart of Java River.
