Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Sorensen.
Hi Elizabeth, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I would love to!
I had been using sound healing as a meditation tool for myself and my immediate family for some time and it was around 2 or 3 years ago that I started seeing a difference in the energy both in myself and those around me, I was intrigued! (I had no idea why it worked up to this point, I just liked the relaxation part of it).
I decided to go back to earn a degree in Integrative Health & Healing and learn more about vibrational healing along with other non-traditional modalities like Traditional Chinese Medicine, Energy Healing, Spirituality, & Mind-Body Connections. I also registered during this time for a 200-hour yoga teacher training (YTT). So, I had a lot going on and I wasn’t looking to add anything else to my plate.
However, my husband was urging me to introduce these sound baths (a session where you are in a relaxed position taking in the sound of various instruments, essentially “bathed” in sound) to others because he told me we can’t keep this to ourselves, everyone should benefit! Due to his urging, I found others who offered sound as a healing modality and I worked with multiple healers around the country to learn as much as I could from experts in this field.
I took what I had learned, and announced on social media what I had been doing and the response was overwhelming, partly because there wasn’t anyone around here that was offering what I was doing and there was a lot of curiosity. Fast forward to now, where I have left my 9-5, I now teach yoga regularly, offer one on one business and life coaching, along with continuing to offer sound healing sessions both at various events and in a studio located in downtown White Bear Lake.
That is how YogaHausMN was born, I wanted to be able to offer different modalities in one space and the philosophy of yoga is something I embrace so to use that to encompass all that I offer was important.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
For the most part, I do feel that it’s been pretty smooth! My biggest struggle was when I first started teaching yoga, I had to step into it and face the fear. And there was a lot of fear! My husband would remind me that when I was first starting with sound healing, I was nervous before every session and teaching would be the same, I just have to keep showing up.
When you are starting something new, whether it’s business or whatever you’re doing, there is a struggle, however, most of that struggle is all within yourself. We stop ourselves from doing so much because we listen to that voice in our head and I decided during this time that if I want something, I’m going after it.
I have to push aside imposter syndrome, I have to push aside my ego, I have to push aside what I think everyone else might be thinking and just do it because it’s about what I want to do, and I’m not allowing a voice in my head tell me I can’t. We truly, truly can do anything we want to do.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I do not like to call myself a sound healer, I’m not healing anyone, I am only facilitating the sound and putting the positive energy and good intention out there so that my clients can heal themselves.
I specialize in helping individuals tap into their subconscious mind through sound. Through studying the effects on our bodies and minds from vibration, I curate a sound session specifically so that individuals can have a safe space to quiet their minds and raise their vibration which helps them on a physical, mental, and spiritual level.
What sets me apart from others is the gongs! I have two fabulous gongs and I spend a lot of time playing them during my sessions to help my clients get to the dreamlike state where transformation takes place. There are a lot of yoga studios offering sound bowls and maybe other instruments in their sessions, however, if you are looking for a transformational experience, go to a gong session!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
So many deserve credit! My husband Will encouraged me to pursue this professionally and I’m so grateful for that nudge!
I have worked with so many mentors and healers who have taught me so much along the way and their support is invaluable. Other healers who are on a similar journey as me, some I speak to regularly to brainstorm new ideas, talk about things that may seem “woo-woo” to others, and offer support when there are challenges.
I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my YTT cohort, & to the women who run Boreal Bliss Yoga Retreats (hey Bryana & Amanda!) for all their support.
I can truly say that if it wasn’t for some immersed time in nature up in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area every summer, I wouldn’t be where I am now. Nature is a natural healer and the BWCA is pure magic.
