Meet Christian Gil Pliego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Gil Pliego.

Christian Gil Pliego

Hi Christian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
A large portion of my musical interest began, unbeknownst to me, with my mother’s array of music selections, from soul music to progressive rock and the 90s dance/electronic scene, her music genres were integrated into part of my selections as I grew up. I also have my older sister who introduced me to the hottest music of the 2010s like dubstep, and modern hip-hop/pop. But I didn’t go anywhere with my music until my senior year of high school (2019-2020) I got tired of listening to the same music.

I wanted something new, specifically for my taste – I thought to myself “Well why don’t I step up? I’m good at writing and have a creative side, many SoundCloud Artists have done it and received praise and success. I’m no different.” I started finding beats I liked, writing lyrics on the city bus, and freestyling at bus stops. It wasn’t easy at first, I practiced my lyrics out loud at home and studied my favorite artist flows and how they delivered them, with a background so diverse in musical genres finding a style wasn’t so hard.

We all face challenges, but, looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest challenge was accepting my reality and seizing my own identity. Being raised by a single mother whilst being a first-generation U.S. citizen, getting a college degree, and having a career, was implemented to me at a very young age. That was the goal. When I discovered my passion for music I felt I couldn’t afford the luxury of trying that career path. I had already done a semester in college and dropped out due to Covid.

I asked myself “How would my family feel when I tell them I want to be a musician?” My chances of re-enrolling were even slimmer now that I wanted to pursue a new path. I feared I would bring disappointment to my family, that I would fail. I had never put myself out there so my social anxiety was through the roof. So much weight on my shoulders I wanted to back out and stick to schooling.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a musician, I specialize in songwriting and vocal performance. I’m knowledgeable in other fields like fashion, and filmmaking.

I differentiate by being able to appreciate all types of musical genres and work with them. It is something I take a lot of pride in. In the future, I’m looking to implement filmmaking and acting into my musical practice.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
I’m an advocate for risk-taking. I thought to myself, “In twenty years would I regret not making that song?” I feared regret more than risking and failing.

It was one of the most motivating factors in my career. Living with fear stops us from taking risks. Stop and think “Will I ask myself ‘What If?’ In the next five or thirty years?”
