Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Johnson.
Hi Josh, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Piano lessons as a kid. Bedroom DJing and producing as a teenager. Playing in bands in my 20s. Music has been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember. Performing and creating come naturally to me, so it’s fitting that I founded Jindo.
The idea was inspired by an event I was hired to DJ in 2018. Jenny, the event planner, asked if I could play music bingo with the teenagers at an all-night party. I put together the playlists, printed up the cards, and played a music bingo game with the group. The kids loved it!
After the game, I thought: “…since everyone is always on their phones anyway, why not have the game cards on the phones too?!” and that’s how it all began.
Jindo sat mostly idle until 2020 when the events industry was turned on its head. I was a non-essential person. I struggled mentally and financially to support my children. However, the lockdowns were a blessing in disguise as they gave me the time and energy to focus on building Jindo.
Three years later, anybody can host or play Jindo – anytime, anywhere. Virtual or Live. Streaming or In-Person. That’s pretty cool. There’s been many ups and downs. Amazing people have come and gone. The mission of Jindo carries on: To empower people to create party game experiences that connect and engage.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been MANY obstacles along the way and there will be many more as we move forward. That’s life. Every day presents a new set of challenges and lessons to be learned.
For me, regulating my emotions and staying consistent has been the biggest struggle. By practicing mindfulness and tracking my habits, I’ve been able to improve those key areas of my personal and professional life.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m proud of the fact that I always pursued my interests and passions.
Like many people, music has a powerful presence in my life. I choose to embrace that power and wield it my way. I’ve written and produced music as part of Hyrdophonics and Modern Condition. Performed on stages in front of 5000+ people. Licensed songs for MTV and others.
I DJ professionally as Soulfulsounder.
I write songs and journals. I practice yoga and meditation. I eat mindfully. I exercise regularly. I am more disciplined and consistent than ever. There’s still lots of work to do. I’m so grateful to be able to get up every day and do what I love.
Jindo is another step in that journey.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Be patient. EVERYTHING takes longer than you think it should, especially if you try to do it all at once.
Clearly define your vision. Outline your values, goals, and strategy. Create and define roles. Build systems for accountability.
Focus and be aggressive. Do one thing. Then, the next thing. One step at a time. Keep going.
