Life & Work with Jacob Blaeser

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Blaeser.

Jacob BLAESER

Hi Jacob, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been doing stand-up comedy for 5 years in the San Francisco area. I’ve been traveling and performing shows all around the US from Hawaii to New York.

This spring I was selected to perform at the World Series of Comedy at The Mail of America. I was born in St. Paul and moved to California at a young age. It is an immense pleasure to come and perform at WSOC in the Twin Cities, the place of my birth…

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
By its very nature, stand-up comedy is a struggle. Standing in the spotlight, on stage, in front of a group of strangers in an attempt to make them laugh is extremely daunting.

I live an hour outside of any major comedy market so I’m constantly driving for hours to perform. I work a full-time job to support my household and I spend most of my free time performing. I work tirelessly towards my goal of stopping myself through Comedy.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am what is considered a blue comic. I talk about darker subject matter than most comedians. I enjoy shining the light on the dark parts of life. I love to hear the groans of the crowd as I set up a darker bit, then subvert expectations and surprise, the audience with their laughter.

I take pride in the fact that my true goal is just to have fun and be as funny as I can on stage. Having fun is a large part of comedy. I’d say I differ from most comics in that, I’m always having fun on stage. Maybe it’s my masochism but, when I bomb, I’m still having fun.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m older than most comics at my level. I started standing up at forty-four. I’m not forty-nine years old and a grandfather. Many of the comics I work with are the same age as my children.
