Check Out Lynn Burton’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynn Burton.

Lynn Burton

Hi Lynn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’m a retired teacher who loves to work with natural materials. I learned how to make Steiner dolls, and when I moved to Two Harbors, I became a member of a craft co-op on the shore of Lake Superior so I could sell my dolls.

The co-op is over 50 years old and is run by members (many of whom are senior citizens). When the manager of the co-op became sick, I volunteered to help out, and I am now the acting manager.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Managing the craft co-op has been an exciting challenge. My friend Mabel T. and many of the other members all pitch in to make the shop run smoothly. Our biggest challenge was when our shop manager became ill (brain cancer), and she did what she could to help us learn the computer system and inventory management.

We “winged it” for a few months. When she died, we were heartbroken. She really loved the shop and left big shoes to fill. Later that same year COVID hit and we were afraid we may have to close. Thankfully some local manufacturing businesses needed face masks, and our seamstresses got to work finding fabric and elastic (which was quite a challenge at the time).

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a former high school teacher.

I love working with all kinds of people, and I also love learning new things. I am really proud of the small changes happening in our art/craft co-op. It’s been wonderful to see how we have come together to support and encourage one another.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
You can learn the most surprising things from the most unexpected sources.
