Today we’d like to introduce you to Joslyn Danielson.
Hi Joslyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first met my business partners nearly a decade ago, in college at U of M – Duluth. Liza and I both studied theatre there and quickly became integrated into the network of music majors as well. Myself, Liza, our third partner, Kirdan, all decided to make the move to the Twin Cities around the same time.
We immediately fell in love with the local music/art scene here. Gradually, we found an expansive network of local bands and music professionals and began throwing music events on and off over about 6 years. When you think of the term “grassroots”, we were it! House parties became house shows, house shows became shows at venues, and shows at venues became an underground weekend-long camping festival.
After having worked together on so many of these projects, we decided to make the jump into starting our own event production company. With the help of so many friends along the way, we have created a business model that focuses on supporting local artists and businesses to get their music in front of wider audiences.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think the struggle that a lot of people can relate to is starting a business with very little financial overhead or accounting knowledge.
We’ve had to get creative, by crowdsourcing sound gear, limiting our costs as much as we can, and utilizing our network of talented creatives to throw events that are truly a community effort.
We are so thankful for the help and enthusiasm from our community and wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for them!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a music event production company focusing on local MPLS/STP artists. We handle event booking, planning, sound gear, light gear, live visuals, promotion/marketing, and stage management.
We are proud to be a Woman/Queer owned company, and we place a high value on creating events that feel safe and inclusive.
What are your plans for the future?
Having just officially started Beyond The Door Productions in May of 2023, we’re just looking forward to getting more shows under our belt! We are hoping to expand the genres of music we present, start working with more venues in the area and purchase new and improved house gear.
We have begun efforts into offering packages for renting our sound gear and offering promotional services to other bands booking shows in the area. Our long-term goal is to plan and execute a full music festival…someday!
