Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Medford.
Hi Emma, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! I’m Emma. I run an Instagram account called PhotosByEJM and sell my photography as wall art on Etsy.
My passion for photography began in 2015 as a sophomore in high school. We had to choose an art elective, so I chose photography. I loved it immediately. Learning about the rule of thirds, leading lines, and aperture was far more interesting than my other classes at the time. Walking around my backyard to complete the weekly photography projects relaxed me when nothing else would. Before this, I thought you were either good at photography or not. I didn’t know it was a skill you could learn.
Once the class finished for the summer, I continued to take pictures everywhere I went. My favorite subject to photograph has always been rural and city landscapes. I also enjoy using the Wes Anderson cinema style in some of the scenes I photograph.
Once I started college in 2017, I left photography at home for a bit. I didn’t revisit it until January 2020. I was studying abroad in Madrid, taking pictures of everything I saw. Day trips around the city with friends. Fridays spent in Cuenca, Segovia, Ávila. Weekends in Valencia, Córdoba, Granada, and London. We were sent home 2 months early because of the pandemic and I needed something to fill my time. During the long months of quarantine, I went on daily excursions to take pictures outside. Now, every time I travel my camera comes with me.
Visit @PhotosByEJM on Instagram to see the places I have captured.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some struggles I have faced include: incorporating photography into my schedule when I am busy, creativity blocks, and impatience when saving up to afford new equipment.
My best work comes when I take a break or find inspiration online. Some of my favorite places for inspiration are @NYTimesTravel on Instagram, Whalebone magazine, and scrolling through Pinterest.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do travel photography and sell my art on Etsy.
Many of my photos are taken in New England, by the water, and in the city. I like to focus on lines and symmetry. I can’t walk through life without seeing them and I like sharing it through photography.
