Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendan O’Meara.
Hi Brendan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started writing and thinking about my story years ago and always had little daydreams about different stories growing up in my head. Whether I zoned out on long car trips or during a class, I was always thinking of some magical, dystopian, or alternate reality.
When I was an intern in DC for a summer, I started to write down the first parts of the book and during the second semester of my senior year in college, I officially wrote half of book one of the series, Cut From Stone.
It wasn’t for years after that when I realized I was constantly thinking about how much I wanted to be a writer while I was building up my current career/day job that I picked writing back up, finished the book, and started to work towards the finished project.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle was figuring out how I wanted to write the story. It’s one thing to say you want to write and be an author, but it’s an entirely different thing to sit yourself down, build a routine, and do it regularly. I am thankful I started thinking about the series so long ago because it was easier for me to map out any problematic areas, but coming up with my process took a while.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think the hardest thing I have had to learn in life is patience. Although I only published my book a year ago I always want bigger success than I maybe should have so I’m most proud of learning patience as a skill.
In addition, when thinking about patience I believe the reason that I was able to write book two so quickly and get moving onto book three already is I have spent the time diving into the book and figuring out not only the world-building aspects of the story, but also how everything will move as the characters progress.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My wife played a MASSIVE role in getting my book published and moving. She runs her marketing firm and helping me in getting the word out about the book while establishing her own small business was crucial to making the first book the success it is.
Honestly, if I did not have my wife involved I do not think I could have self-published. Being an indie author alone is a task I would not suggest to anyone and starting with her on my team has been incredible because it gave me the freedom to start our path and decide our future.
