Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Watson.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started making music in about 2002. I tried out FL Studio 2.0 (going way back) and freestyling with my friend Travis (Dom-T). We would record tapes for hours freestyling to beats we found on Limewire.
Eventually, I had a friend introduced me to Stevie J, who ran Northern Flame Studios and gave me my first opportunity to record songs. In exchange for studio time, I would provide the studio beats I would scour the internet for so that Stevie, Palace, and C-Silence would have beats to rap on. I felt it was working on my credibility.
I then was reintroduced to making beats with EddieDition, and linked up with Marko Garramone (RIP) aka Polo and we created a group called PNA. We had a full album our senior year of high school and caught the buzz. I eventually went solo into production and attended McNally Smith College of Music in 2009 for Audio Engineering and Music Production.
I continued to produce music up until 2016 for C-Silence, Killa-B, Beezy, Mike White, Painkilla, Bliss, MC1980, Modern Gentlemen, and Good Knight, until I had to put it down for a few years to work to get myself out of debt.
In 2021, I was let go from a high-paying tech job. I think anyone would have felt it as a huge failure but I took that as an opportunity to dial back into music. I spent that year in Michigan taking care of my grandfather until he passed, continued to produce music, and sold licenses online.
I started DJing in 2022 and that has taken off tremendously. I started my own business, Sound Check. A live sound and DJ business that has flourished rapidly.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life is a strange thing.
You can feel empowerment from all different things in life, but when those things lose their value, you have to search for yourself. I battled addiction my whole life with drugs and alcohol. I finally got completely sober in July 2022. I recently celebrated one year of complete sobriety.
I owe every opportunity since then to that and my higher power.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a music producer, audio engineer, techy, DJ, husband, developer. business owner, and consultant.
I have a very busy life. I mainly specialize in throwing events in the Twin Ports and surrounding areas. I am also very calculated in my production. I love music, I play many instruments and have expertise in sound design.
My biggest accomplishment fame-wise was opening for Tech N9ne at Clyde Iron Works. I’m most proud of the relationship I have built since moving back to the Twin Ports. Creating positive relationships with people and places has been integral to how I conduct business.
I welcome everybody with a smile and handshake or hug. Integrity matters the most.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I would love to see myself as a prominent DJ globally. I love EDM, Rap, Dubstep, and House. I think I will transition into a more global sound.
I would love to build a network for all my friends that I believe in and work with to establish a platform so that we all eat and are successful.
