Rising Stars: Meet Morgan Carnes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Carnes.

Morgan Carnes

Hi Morgan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Humbletown formed in Vermillion, South Dakota after we (Morgan Carnes and Dylan Lewis) met through mutual friends. We instantly had a musical connection and started performing just weeks after meeting.

Our journey has been long and has had many twists and turns. During our time as a band we have had two children, moved three times, and remodeled a home. After having our children, we decided it was time to pursue our passion for music and made it our primary profession.

We recently completed a 46-day national tour through the middle, south, and eastern US with our children. We are looking forward to planning many more national and regional tours in the coming year.

Though we formed as a duo, we often play with a band featuring upright bass and fiddle. We work with several musicians throughout the country, but our primary accompanying musicians are James Schrag on upright bass from Rochester, NY, and Ben Lemay on fiddle from Rapid City, SD.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think it’s always a struggle to decide to pursue music professionally, but it has gone pretty well so far.

Our biggest challenge thus far has been juggling a music career while parenting. Taking the kids on the road makes things infinitely more complicated, but it’s also a lot of fun and the kids love it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a bluegrass/old-time band featuring flat-pick guitar, clawhammer banjo, fiddle, and upright bass. We play mostly original songs with some beloved covers and fiddle tunes mixed in.

Although bluegrass and old-time are similar genres, a mix of the two is fairly unique. We have a lot of fun blending these styles and co-creating original music. Our songs are fairly eclectic and feature strong vocal harmonies and instrumentals.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
We always enjoy our time in Minneapolis. It’s a charming city with lots to offer and lots to do. We enjoy the restaurants, local shops, music venues and shows, and a variety of neighborhoods.

The music scene is nice cohesive and supportive. We’ve made a lot of great friends and connections through performing and jamming with local musicians. We also love the green spaces and free family activities.

In terms of things I like least, I think it would be nice if there were a more comprehensive rail system.
