Hi Priyadarshini, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
In the realm where science meets art, I navigate a creative journey that defies convention. I am an emerging artist, a biologist, and a nature photographer with a passionate mission: to capture inspiring moments of our natural world, from wildlife to landscapes and the mesmerizing night sky. My goal is to inspire conservation efforts and ignite a deeper connection between people and nature. “Moments of Inspiration in Nature” is a centric theme of my photographic pursuit.

My foray into the artistry of photography began on the sun-kissed shores of India’s coastal beaches during a school excursion. There, I first held a simple point-and-shoot camera, and in that instant, my lifelong love affair with nature photography was born. However, the roots of this passion were nurtured during my time in the Girl Scouts, where I acquired invaluable survival skills and a sense of adventure which led to a strong affinity for nature and the great outdoors. Over time, I ventured into the wild to capture not just stunning images of wildlife and their habitats but also the grandeur of nature’s events, from awe-inspiring migrations to captivating sunrises and sunsets. This foundation instilled in me not only an appreciation for nature’s beauty but also a responsibility to protect it.

Living in Minnesota, in this land of 10,000 lakes for the past 12 years; I have relished the ever-changing seasons and these experiences play a pivotal role in my photographic journey. From the vibrant greens of summer to the fiery hues of autumn, the pristine white of winter, and the rebirth of spring, the state’s diverse landscapes provide an ever-evolving canvas for my art. Solo camping under the stars has been a transformative experience for me; allowing me to reconnect with nature in its purest form. It is within this solitude that I discovered a wellspring of creativity, particularly when capturing the mesmerizing beauty of the night sky through astrophotography. Venturing up north to the shores of Lake Superior, with its vastness and mystique occupies a sacred corner in my heart and her ever-changing beautiful shores painted by the different seasons become a subject of many of my photographs.

As a nature photographer, my work is not just about taking pictures; it is about telling a narrative, evoking emotions, and inspiring a sense of awe & reverence for our environment. It is a blend of art and science, where my educational background in biology enhances my understanding of the ecosystems I capture. Whether it is through exhibitions, publications, or collaborations, I’m dedicated to using my art to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire us to “take action”. My journey as an artist and creative is a continuous exploration of the profound connection between humans and nature, and I invite others to join me on this transformative and inspiring voyage.

As I have traveled across different parts of the United States and explored various countries, I have been awestruck by the breathtaking beauty of national parks, wildlife refuges, and state preserves. Encounters with the wild in these conservation havens have deepened my understanding of an ever-changing natural world. The dynamic transitions observed in wildlife behaviors and the challenges faced by their unique ecosystems are fueling my unwavering commitment to explore further, capture more, and share the remarkable but fleeting beauty of nature.

Through my art, I strive to inspire a profound love for nature, raise awareness about conservation, and illuminate the intricate beauty that surrounds us all. “The wilderness holds answers to more questions than we have yet learned to ask!” – Nancy Wynne Newhall.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As an upcoming artist and nature photographer, I’ve encountered several challenges on my creative path. One of the most prominent challenges has been gaining visibility and recognition in the highly competitive world of nature photography. In an era dominated by digital media, standing out among countless talented photographers is no simple task. Building an audience for my nature photography, both online and offline, demands consistent effort in promoting my work and connecting with potential viewers and buyers.

Balancing my artistic vision with the commercial aspects of nature photography has also presented challenges. On one hand, I’m deeply committed to capturing the raw, unspoiled beauty of the natural world as I see it. However, I also recognize the need to produce photographs that resonate with potential buyers and clients while preserving the integrity of the natural subjects I capture.

Historically, nature and wildlife photography has been dominated by men, and breaking through this gender bias can be challenging. Women often face unique obstacles in gaining equal recognition and opportunities. However, I believe that diversity in the field of nature photography enriches the art form, and I’m determined to continue pushing boundaries and proving that women can excel in this realm as well.

Marketing and self-promotion skills have also been crucial for expanding my reach. Despite these challenges, I embrace them as opportunities for growth, continuously learning, seeking mentorship, and building a supportive network. I remain committed to overcoming these obstacles on my path to becoming a respected nature photographer.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My professional life is a unique blend of two seemingly distinct worlds: the world of science and the realm of art and creativity. This duality has shaped a career that is as fulfilling as it is diverse.

In my scientific career, I have earned a master’s degree in biotechnology and a doctorate in computational biology. These academic pursuits equipped me with a deep understanding of scientific principles, data analysis, and research methodologies. I have had the privilege of contributing to cutting-edge research in new drug discovery.

Simultaneously, my passion for art and creativity has been a driving force in my life. I have explored various artistic mediums, from photography to painting to convey my perspective on the natural world. My work often draws inspiration from scientific concepts, and I strive to bridge the gap between art and science through my creations.

I have exhibited my photography in prestigious galleries and have been part of juried art shows in various states in the US. Through exhibitions, publications, and public engagement, I aim to inspire conversation and understanding regarding the wonders of our natural world and the critical need to preserve this beauty.

In essence, my career represents a harmonious blend of two passions—science and art—that, when combined, offer a richer and more profound perspective on the world around us. It is a journey that constantly evolves as I explore new artistic horizons and delve deeper into scientific inquiry. And, above all, it’s a path I feel privileged to walk every day.
