Today we’d like to introduce you to Ella Jeffreys.
Hi Ella, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started working in a salon when I was 14 and from a young age have always been interested in fashion, and beauty, I studied high fashion and design ever since I was little. I graduated high school and immediately went to Aveda for cosmetology school, my upbringing wasn’t the most loving and supportive and I had moved out of my parents my senior year of high school so I was excited and nervous to start my own life at such a young age.
Two weeks into cosmetology school one of my instructors introduced me to Antoinette Beenders, an award-winning, genius, extremely talented hairdresser. I was immediately inspired and assisted her while she was at the school and was then asked to help her with Congress, Aveda’s biggest hair show. She has been my mentor, inspiration, and support throughout my career.
I have now assisted her on many shoots and shows and every single time I learn so much, more than I ever knew was in the world of hairdressing. I’ve now been in the industry for a little over 4 years, I am a master colorist and nominated for a one-shot hair award and I’m so excited to see the rest of my career grow.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, my childhood was traumatic, I was adopted at 5 years old and my family I was adopted into didn’t feel loving and supportive, we had police at our house all the time, I moved out my senior year of high school, was paying for all my stuff including groceries at 16.
Because of was adopted at such an old age, I have extremely bad separation issues and trust issues which have caused bumps in the road for my personal life but my career has always been my happy place and I’ve put all my work and energy into my career and made a life for myself I always wanted.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a hair color specialist! My specialty is bright vivid fashion colors and also long color corrections! – but I love all colors including balayage, reds, etc. I do hair shows; and avant-garde hair and I love everything about this creative industry.
I have been nominated for a one-shot hair award this year and I could not be more proud of myself given I haven’t been in the industry that long.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I have always appreciated my clients obviously but after COVID-19 I have grown more appreciation for them and realized the importance of my job and making people feel beautiful every day.
