Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Jurvakainen.
Hi Sebastian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Raised in Arizona, I was around trade work my whole life. I have been in the construction industry since I was 15, working for a relative’s company. I worked a remodeling job for 2 1/2 years before I ventured out for a change. In the summer of 2019, I traveled up to Bristol Bay, Alaska to do commercial salmon fishing. I then returned to Arizona to do construction again for the winter. The following spring, I moved out to Williston, North Dakota to try out roofing.
After 7 months out in Novak, I migrated south once again for winter. I went back to work in the remodeling industry and stuck it out there for a year. Eventually, the cost of living drove my wife and me back up north for a cheaper opportunity. We landed here in Minnesota near her family. After working in construction for another 6 months, I decided it was time for me to pick a new career path.
Set on becoming a business owner I scoured opportunities that would be profitable and enjoyable. After some intensive research and some number crunching, I landed on seal coating. The perfect mix of labor and satisfying fun.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge I faced when it came time to put my plan into action was financing.
At the time, I didn’t have the means to purchase all the necessary equipment needed to start up my business. With my wife by my side and God in my prayers, everything seemed to work out and line up.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My company is SB Seal Coating. We specialize in asphalt maintenance and preventative care. A typical job for us begins with preparing the asphalt. We clean the pavement and the cracks in the asphalt. Any oil stains or grease stains are scrubbed and soaked with a priming agent to help the sealer bond.
Once the prep work is complete, we come in and fill all the cracks with hot tar. Lastly, we come in and spread the seal coat across the asphalt. Our seal coat is a tar emulsion compound that is environmentally friendly. It is mixed with sand to keep traction when it gets wet. Seal coating has many, many benefits. Sealing your asphalt protects it from all ranges of weather and prolongs its life immensely. It also gives a huge boost to your curb appeal.
My proudest accomplishment thus far has been setting the goal to start my own business and reaching that goal. I have always felt as though I wanted to run my own company and work for myself. I just never knew when or what that may be and had never stopped to think about it. With everything going on in today’s world I realized that I need to start materializing my dreams and goals and make them happen before it is too late.
I feel that my young age and my ambition set me apart from others. At 20 years young, I have become a business owner and a father. I find it important to set goals and chase dreams no matter your age. Today is granted and tomorrow is never promised so why hold back on becoming who you truly want to be?
With the correct mindset goals and dreams become a reality.
How do you define success?
Success to me is waking up in the morning knowing I am doing my best to better myself. Success isn’t just reaching a goal or reaching a set expectation.
Success is the ability to not give up and to not let go of your goals. Success is the ability to keep on pushing towards those goals and dreams no matter how hard it is. Success isn’t defined only by the overall outcome, but rather the journey that also led to that outcome.
