Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabe Reasoner.
Hi Gabe, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started the musical project that became Careful Gaze in 2013, outside of Minnesota. In 2017, I moved here for better music/work/life opportunities, and shortly after that, we rebranded to Careful Gaze. I have made and played music for people my whole life, in various forms.
I started in Nursing Homes and Hospitals as a child and moved to rock venues and bars in high school. Now, we tour around the country as well as play locally and have released multiple albums and singles.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Is it ever a smooth road?
As a band, we have faced a global pandemic, various member changes, having our van stolen (and recovering it), multiple people in the industry letting us down/screwing us over, and large financial obstacles and hurdles. But I would say the biggest obstacle and challenge is finding a way to stand out and get people’s attention. Both in terms of physically bringing them to shows and also noticing you online amidst everything else.
As a human, I have faced everything mentioned above as well as the tolls of being a busy, traveling musician and still having meaningful relationships. You sink a lot of time into something, and oftentimes it doesn’t feel like it pays off.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In simple terms, Careful Gaze is a heavy rock band from Minneapolis. We write and record music and play live shows.
A lot of people describe our sound as having an early 2000s post-hardcore nostalgia vibe. I think we are probably known for our live shows/the community around the music. I would say I’m most proud of our song Rainbows, which we still get messages about from people who have identified with it. That song has reached over a million streams on Spotify, which was a huge milestone for us.
As for what sets us apart, I think we put a lot of time and effort into making something original that isn’t too derivative from one specific genre or artist. In other words, I don’t think there are a lot of bands that Careful Gaze sounds exactly like.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Everything can change at any time.
