Daily Inspiration: Meet Imade Imasuen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imade Imasuen.

Imade Imasuen

Hi Imade, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a master barber and barbershop owner. I’ve been a barber for 14 years and a shop owner for 7 years. I started at The Original Moler Barber School and graduated in 2013. I worked as a manager at another barbershop for 1 year before opening my own.

I decided to open my shop because it’s difficult for a woman to be treated fairly in a male-dominated industry and being who I am, I love a good challenge! Now that I have successfully been in business for 7 years, I’ve decided to pursue a career in music so I am currently working on my released EP!

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! At the beginning of this journey, I found out I was pregnant with my son during the 2nd week of barber school. My instructor told me to take my time and come back to finish school when I was ready so because of that, it took me 4 years to finish, even though barber school is only 9 months long.

Yes, I was 8-9 months pregnant and in school! When I decided to open my shop, it was very difficult but I had a lot of help from my mom and sister, being they helped take care of my son while I renovated the space for my shop. I couldn’t afford to hire a contractor to help with renovations so a lot of the handiwork was done by myself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in hair cutting and men’s grooming as my profession but now I have decided to pursue a career in my lifelong dream of becoming a singer/songwriter. I’m known for being a shop owner but now I’d like to introduce my talents to the world, which most people don’t even know I have.

I am most proud of being able to achieve each goal I’ve put my mind to, with pursuing music being the final goal. What sets me apart from others is my ambition to still maintain my business while achieving my lifelong dream. Most people my age would be content with being a business owner and give up on their dreams but not me! I’m just getting started!

What matters most to you? Why?
My family, my business, and my happiness. I wouldn’t be as ambitious as I am if it weren’t for them, which immediately affects my happiness. When I’m happy, everything else falls into place.
