Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Hoff.
Hi Michelle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
I love creating homes. As a kid, I played “house” by making walls, rooms, and furniture out of raked leaves. As a teen, I mowed lawns. My degree is in Landscape management/Horticulture. While in college, I started and ran (for ten years) a commercial and residential cleaning business. Drawn to design, I unplugged my vacuum and began a ten year career at Room & Board (R&B) home furnishings. I loved every aspect of being a part of the R&B team; a values-driven company steeped in beautiful design and a love of home that I carry with me today.
R&B restructured, which allowed me to redesign my life and my focus. I discovered life coaching and was trained by the International Coach Federation. My training culminated in a pilgrimage in the French Pyrenees Mountains with Life Coaches from around the world. On that walk I created my company, Design Within, LLC. My soul was opened to this human-centric way of helping others create a well designed home. I loved the work but quickly realized it wasn’t practical to deliver both coaching and interior and landscape design, painting, decluttering and organizing projects. For several years I helped create beautiful and more functional spaces.
Hungry for more, I got my MA. My thesis, “Recover Your Authentic Self Using Life Coaching and Home as Your Medium,” became the genesis of my Amazon-selling book, Compassionate Decluttering, How to Soulfully Surrender Your Stuff, which I launched in November of 2022. As an empath with thirty years of experience digging around in people’s homes my book is steeped with loving compassion. Addressing the emotional, social, and physical burden clutter places on many people. As a butt-kicker, I have over twenty five tools to get people moving to do the “A$$ and elbows.” work to get excess clutter out the door. My business today is Home Coach Hoff’, LLC. As your Home Coach, my goal is to help busy humans access their wisdom, create systems to confidently eliminate excess so they can live in a home they love and are proud of and have fun doing it!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I prefer not to be told what to do. Who does, right?? I am very determined and independent. I like to lead from my own inner truth, always seeking personal fulfillment. I am infinitely curious which keeps everyone clear and honest. It’s okay to challenge old beliefs and behaviours. Dare to ask “Why?” Why do you care what the new paint color is, the “right ” coffee mug to own or the perfect way to label and organize your stuff? These trends will continuously change. I prefer to help my client’s dig deeper and find their own truth to live within their home with more ease, with less shame, anxiety and stress. This is why my approach to decluttering is unique.
Organizing spaces is wonderfully helpful but I wanted to teach people how to live from their values, tap into loving self-compassion, use curiosity and be accountable to their choices. My client’s are more empowered, have great clarity, confidence and become a more conscious consumer. Better able to define loved items which makes them able to let go as well as stop, what can easily become, excess from entering their spaces.
With all of this said, I created a niche for myself as a Home Coach. This is another way I carved out a unique path. When I share that I help people access their values and vision to get rid of excess, a light bulb goes on and they get it. My experience tells me our most significant life is on the other side of excess—everyone who has busted through excess experiences liberation with is such an amazing feeling! I am looking for Clutter Warriors who are ready and 1% willing to do the internal and physical work of decluttering. When clutter is a barrier to a beautiful life, I will be here and be your biggest cheerleader and help you uncover your loved home!
