Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Kohn.
Hi Shannon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a registered nurse for about 5 years when I started my IV therapy business. I had worked in the hospital setting for most of my career, mainly in the Emergency Department. After becoming a mom, it was tough for my family and me to adjust to working 12-hour shifts, evenings/weekends, and holidays. My personal life constantly clashed with my work life, and because of that, I knew it was time for a change. I accepted a home infusion nurse position with a remote company where I could schedule my clients, which I needed. I worked there for about a month and have not received a client from that company, so I knew I needed to look for something else. While looking for another IV therapy job, I found a link that brought me to a course on how to start your vitamin IV therapy Clinic as a registered nurse. Immediately after taking the course, I reached out to Reagan West, the owner of Owatonna Fitness and the Fresh Cafe, to see if she had a space or any insight on where I could go with this new idea. I had not talked to her in about four years, and something told me to send her a message. She got back to me within an hour and said she would open a room soon. She also explained to me how she was talking to a friend, telling them that she was going to start looking for someone to do IV therapy out of that room. And after that, I knew this was meant to be!
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s hard to say whether the road has been smooth or not because starting your own business comes with challenges but also comes with a lot of rewards. Those rewards make up for the challenges. I got my business up and running in about three weeks from when I started. It took a lot more money than I thought it would to get started, which I am still trying to pay off, but that is typical when starting a business. The other struggles have been financial, as much of the money I make goes back into my company, supplies, rent, etc. I am more relaxed than I would like to be. Therefore, the same income is not there but changes each week! The struggles will always be there, but it is all about perception.
Let’s switch gears and talk about work. What should we know about your work?
I am a registered nurse and the founder and owner of the Southern Minnesota Infusion & Injection Bar in Owatonna, MN. I specialize in elective vitamin-infused IV therapy and injections. The primary purposes for these infusions and injections are overall wellness, energy, inflammation, weight loss, immune boosting, etc. I also offer infusions for migraines, hangovers, and current illnesses. I am most proud that I never thought I could start my own business, and I did, especially coming from a family of business owners. What sets me apart from others is how caring and compassionate I am and how I consider my client’s best interests.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best about our city is that I brought newer preventative health services to Owatonna and Southern Minnesota, as most of my clients had never heard of vitamin IV therapy. I also love that when I opened, there was not a brick-and-mortar location like mine within 40 miles of Owatonna. What I like least about the area is that we are still very rural, and the service is very new, which makes some people unsure about my services or feel unnecessary. I aim to change that with education and proof that my services can improve your health!
