Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Wells.
Hi Lisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been in the mortgage industry for over 24 years. It is all I have ever done since attending college and deciding against attending law school. I started as an originator and worked to learn the business while waitressing at night to pay the bills. I kept with it and loved helping clients understand loans and what they were and were not getting. I adjusted my business once I went through the mortgage process to buy my first home. I had only been in the industry for 1 1/5 years. It was a horrible experience! I had no communication- no idea of what things would cost me, and, worst of all, I was told 2 weeks before closing that I would need a co-signer since I did not qualify. I ended up closing, but that experience forced me to tune into my own business, and everything we do today is to avoid that kind of experience with our clients—proactive communication systematically before, during, and after the mortgage process. We must fully underwrite before we issue an approval letter and do a full review in person or via Zoom with clients to ensure they understand what homes could cost them.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are many struggles; this business requires you to be a student forever. You will slide backward as soon as you think it is figured out. It is a business of knowing and understanding mortgage programs and the economics of what makes interest rates move, how to market yourself, and how to be a leader to your clients, your team, and business partners. We wear a lot of hats in multiple roles, which are ever-changing.
Thanks for sharing that. You could tell us more about your work.
The mortgage business is the primary thing I do. We don’t specialize in any client, but we work with many first-time and upper-bracket buyers with multiple companies. We are most known for having a dialed-in process and permanently closing on time.
