Today we’d like to introduce you to Mickey Nixon Films.
Hello, Mickey Nixon Films, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We started by taking photos of locations that were abandoned. Then, we decided to start filming our adventures and making videos of these spots. We wanted to share the experience with everyone interested. We began doing photos about 5 years ago, in 2019, and videos around 4 years ago. We still do both when we get to a location, taking pictures and videos.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Lots of these locations are decayed, so a person wants to be extra cautious when exploring them. We have encountered many obstacles, from rotting floors and ceilings in old houses to asbestos and black mold. We take precautions as far as respirators are concerned and make a sound judgment on structure stability. If something looks unsafe, we will walk away, but there have been certain situations where we have taken risks and shouldn’t have. For example, we went to an abandoned nuclear power plant in 1980, and the danger level was high. Not as far as radiation is concerned because the plant was never actually in use, so that was not an issue. However, pitfalls up to 50 to 75 ft deep and concrete debris falling from above were fundamental factors in exploring the location. We were cautious in that exploration and took beautiful pictures and videos of the cooling tower, turbine halls, and the old control room.
Thanks for sharing that. Please tell us more about your work.
Well, we are known for exploring and photographing abandoned locations. We have explored and documented old farmhouses, schools, churches, power plants, hospitals, etc. When people view our photos or videos and genuinely appreciate them, capturing and sharing something with people who enjoy it feels good. Everyone brings something original and unique to whatever passion or hobby they have, and we are not the first people to go out and do this sort of thing, and we won’t be the last. However, we add our twist to it just by being us.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Being outside and having fun. Running around playing and just being a kid.
