Hi Amina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Thank you! It all started back in 2018 when I began baking out of sheer boredom! I was knee-deep in studying for my New York Bar Exam, feeling burnt out from all the reading. So, I decided to take a breather and do something to clear my head. That’s when I whipped up a cake for my husband’s birthday. The outcome was a bit unexpected, but it sparked something in me.
Feeling motivated to improve, I decided to take on the challenge of making my oldest child’s 3rd birthday cake. To my delight, it turned out beautifully! Encouraged by my success, I offered to make birthday cakes for a few friends’ kids, free of charge. They just had to pick the flavor and theme, giving me the perfect opportunity to practice and experiment with different styles and tastes.
Then, in April 2020, my friend Eve reached out to me with an opportunity. She informed me that a friend’s daughter was turning 1 and suggested I make the cake. Initially hesitant, as I hadn’t baked for anyone beyond Eve and another friend, Eve’s belief in me was unwavering. With her encouragement, I mustered the confidence to take on the challenge.
I quickly gathered a recipe for a carrot cake, headed to the store for supplies, and got to work. The result? A cake that exceeded my expectations, leaving me in awe of what I had accomplished. And just like that, Veeyon Cakes was born!
As Veeyon Cakes approaches its 4th anniversary this April, I’m thrilled to say it’s been an incredible journey. I’ve had the pleasure of creating numerous custom cakes and treats, bringing joy to countless customers along the way. Here’s to many more years of sweet success!
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We’ve encountered a few hurdles along the way, and one of the biggest ones for me is managing time. Being a solo entrepreneur while also juggling a full-time job, time has become my constant struggle. The 24 hours in a day just don’t seem to be enough anymore. I find myself working tirelessly round the clock just to ensure that all orders are ready for pickup.
Another challenge we face is price comparison. Our customers often compare our prices to those of large chain grocery stores, expecting them to be lower. However, they tend to overlook the fact that we operate differently. Unlike those big chains, we don’t have the advantage of buying in bulk, which affects our pricing. Additionally, our products are crafted from scratch and tailored to each customer’s preferences, which naturally adds to the cost. It’s not just about the expense of ingredients, but also the time and effort invested in preparing each order before it leaves our door
