Inspiring Conversations with Courtney LaPlante of Imperium Dance Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney LaPlante.

Courtney LaPlante

Hi Courtney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.

My dance journey began in Duluth, Minnesota, when I was 4. I can still vividly recall the excitement of stepping into the dance studio for the first time—it was like entering a whole new world filled with music, movement, and a deep sense of belonging. My mother enrolled me in gymnastics and dance classes when I was four, and I quickly developed a deep passion for both disciplines. However, a back injury in gymnastics at the age of seven forced me to focus solely on dancing. From that moment, I knew dance would become integral to my life. As I grew older, I had the privilege of experiencing various dance studios in Duluth and learning from different instructors and choreographers. I dedicated myself to becoming a skilled dancer and achieved great success, winning bronze, silver, and two gold medals for the state dance team in high school. These accomplishments gave me the confidence to audition for TV shows in the dance world. After high school, I transitioned into instructing and coaching for several studios and teams in Duluth, eager to share my passion with others. This journey has been incredibly fulfilling, shaping my skills as a dancer, identity, and sense of purpose. Throughout my journey, I have made many friends in the dance community, some of whom have become long-term collaborators, enriching my experience in dance over the years.

In middle school, I met my now-husband Arnie, who now shares my love for dance through the many years of watching and supporting me dancing, teaching, coaching, and watching our daughter Lexi for the past few years. We now have two children, Lexi and Dax, and it brings me joy to see Lexi embrace dance and become a talented dancer herself. Over time, we have noticed the challenges in the dance world, particularly the pressure to perform and the need for more focus on technique and individual growth. This inspired us to create Imperium Dance Company, a sanctuary where quality and technique are prioritized over quantity. We offer tailored technique classes for different ages and skill levels, allowing students to develop their skills at their own pace.

In July 2023, a pivotal moment in my dance career occurred when I faced a challenging situation that forced me to a crossroads. It was then that I realized that maybe it was my time to put my years of vision to work, embracing the present and focusing on what truly mattered. This experience redefined my priorities and set me on a path to achieve my long-held aspirations.

In September of 2023, while Arnie was working on a road project as an inspector, a casual conversation with the building landlord on the project led to exploring a space for lease. This encounter signaled the turning point, as we recognized the opportunity and the potential for our venture to take shape. The location boasted a nice, convenient neighborhood with several amenities nearby, making it ideal for families like ours

With support from the dance community and various organizations, we navigated the challenges of starting a business. The City of Duluth’s 1200 Fund provided crucial financial support, and the Northland small business development center provided small business guidance/mentorship, allowing us to open Imperium Dance Company in February 2024. It has become a place where dancers can grow, thrive, and rediscover their love for dance in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

Mostly, it’s been a relatively smooth journey. Our journey with Imperium wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support we’ve received. From the get-go, the dance community rallied behind us, embracing the idea of something fresh and innovative in the area. Friends and family have been our biggest cheerleaders, even if they’re probably tired of hearing Arnie and me talk endlessly about Imperium. Over 20 friends and family members pitched in to help set up Imperium, which was heartwarming.

Local business mentors played a crucial role in guiding us through the intricacies of entrepreneurship, and our friends & families’ love and support have been immeasurable. Sure, there have been ups and downs, but that’s what’s made the journey exciting. No one said it would be easy, but I was meant to take on this challenge of creating something like Imperium. My experiences as a student and instructor/coach in various dance scenarios have made me keenly aware of the need for something different. So, yes, there have been hurdles, but each one has only made us stronger and more determined to see Imperium succeed.

We’ve been impressed with Imperium Dance Company, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart?

In Duluth, there are numerous dance studios, each with its own strengths. However, Imperium Dance Company stands out for its commitment to flexible and personalized training. We offer dancers the freedom to set their schedules, ensuring convenience and adaptability. With small class sizes, we provide an intimate learning environment, establishing ourselves as Duluth’s premier boutique dance training facility.

Our doors are open to ages 4-24 and all skill levels, catering to competitive dancers, recreational dancers, and those simply interested in trying it out. We understand the importance of balancing academics, sports, and other activities such as prom, family vacations, or schoolwork. That’s why we offer absolute flexibility in dance training, supporting the holistic development of our youth without sacrificing other aspects of their lives.

At Imperium Dance Company, we take pride in nurturing young dancers to reach their full potential. Our expertise lies in pushing dancers to achieve their best through a unique approach that inspires them to excel. We bring in instructors and choreographers from diverse backgrounds, offering a comprehensive curriculum that extends beyond traditional dance classes to include flexibility and strength training, dance cardio, and more. Our aim is to cater to the individual needs and aspirations of each dancer, providing a well-rounded dance education.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Opening your own business is a unique and challenging experience for which you can’t be prepared. The journey is filled with ups and downs, and it’s crucial to quickly overcome the downs and not let negativity bring you down. It would be best to surround yourself with a supportive circle of people willing to listen to you. Share your successes with them, celebrate your victories, and let them be a source of encouragement. Similarly, when you feel defeated or face challenges, don’t hesitate to discuss it with your trusted circle. By expressing your thoughts and emotions, you prevent bottling everything up inside. Your support system can offer valuable insights and help you become the best version of yourself, ultimately contributing to the growth and success of your business.
