Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Arango-Diaz.
Hi Juan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I wanted to learn how to tile to start my own business, so I applied for a job to learn while being paid; then, by accident, I applied for a bathtub and tile refinishing job, which I had no idea what that was. At first, I was not convinced 100% that’s what I wanted for my business adventure, so I ended up quitting and kept going on with my life; at the time, I was working at Shinola Detroit Watchmaking, but my old boss from the bathtub and tile refinishing kept calling me to go back to refinishing. After 3 months, I decided to try it since I would be my boss anyway. Once back and on my own, it made me happy to see the customer’s faces of happiness once I was done with the project. They could not believe that their ugly bathtub, sink, countertops, or tile could go from very ugly to like new in only a matter of a day or two.
At that moment, I decided to be a professional bathtub and tile refinisher. I learned as much as possible from my old trainer, who thankfully had 25+ years of experience and did not hesitate to answer any questions; I am very grateful I had the opportunity to have him as my trainer. Then, I became a certified bathtub and tile refinisher, and soon after, I let my job go and went on my own! That’s how -Juan Tub at a Time- was born.
I was living in Michigan when everything happened, and I went to Chicago for my training. I established a friendship with One of the students for the same certification I was attending who already had a business in Minnesota, and we were talking about expanding with tub and tile refinishing; he had a business established, and I had the experience, so that was a no brainer for me to go for it.
I moved to Minnesota soon after since he got a contract, and I was ready to complete it; once the project was done, we decided to each go our ways, and since I was already in Minnesota and the twin cities were starting to look for my services I just decided this was going to be my new state, my new opportunity and I do not regret it at all. The twin cities have adopted me, and now I make sure every customer who chooses Juan Tub at a Time is happy with their new bathtub, tiles, countertops, or sink! We take care of them all! Today is the year since we started, and top quality and customer service have always been our #1 priorities.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every time we fall is a new lesson or learning experience, so I cannot complain about difficulties since it helps me to grow. But in the beginning, the financial part was the most difficult since I had no financial help; there is always a way to achieve what you want; you have to look for it.
We’re big fans of Arango Companies LLC, DBA Juan Tub at a Time. For our readers who might need to be more familiar with the brand, what can you tell them about it?
Bathtub, tile, countertop, sink refinishing, and top quality and customer service have always been my #1 priorities; we don’t have customers; we expand our family! And not all the companies think that way. We are the contractor you can trust, and no matter what, I will be there to complete your project and won’t only stop once you’re delighted with the results.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I was lucky to have my very experienced trainer as a mentor; he showed me the path and did not hide anything from me. He set me up for success, and definitely, you need to find that person to guide you and save you a ton of time and effort. Mentor is the way to go!
