Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Pope.
Hi Kathy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Art has always been my passion, a journey that has led me through many mediums. The allure of cut paper art captivated me, and a few years ago, I delved into it, creating a stunning portrait of my house. At that moment, I knew I had found my calling. The world of house portraiture was just the beginning, and now, I find joy in recreating a diverse range of subjects with paper.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any journey, mine has had its share of challenges. Recently, I’ve been grappling with aspects beyond the realm of paper collage, such as mastering Photoshop for creating cards and prints (a task that proved more daunting than anticipated), and navigating the intricacies of running a business. The unexpected hurdle of technology has been a test of my resilience, but I’ve persevered, determined to continue sharing my art with the world.
Thanks for sharing that. So, tell us more about your work next.
When I say I create paper collages, it’s easy to assume that I create abstract art, but it’s quite the opposite. I take an image and recreate it by hand, cutting and assembling all the fine details like individual bricks on the house, mullions on the windows, and flowers on the potted plants. I love to recreate everyday places and objects that bring joy to the familiar, like a Norwegian dala horse or a box of 64 crayons (if you didn’t have one, you wanted one!). From a distance, you might think it’s a painting, but when you get closer, you can see the detail and depth of the layers of paper.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
On summer days, I ran around the yard and on weekends at the cabin on the lake. Or winter snowstorms and building snow forts where the plows left huge piles.
