Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Lakenen
Hi Kimberly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have loved weddings since I was a teenager, binge-watching Four Weddings and David Tutera’s My Fair Wedding. I even had a Tumblr account dedicated to weddings. Eventually, reality got the best of me. I decided I needed an “adult” career, so I settled on majoring in Marketing Communication at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where I graduated in 2020. I specialized in social media marketing, but I wanted to know what I wanted to do with my degree once I graduated. While I went to school, I worked at multiple Holiday Inns where I saw significant events like Weddings every week. Seeing significant events motivated me to leap into the event industry and return to something I was passionate about.
I started as an intern at a local wedding venue, where I would set up and tear down chairs for the ceremony. Eventually, I took the plunge and started my own business. In my first season, I offered my wedding coordination services for free in exchange for reviews and tips to grow my portfolio. I ended up naming my business. It’s the Little Things Events because I love to focus on the details and ensure every small decision in your wedding planning process is noticed. My business specializes in Day of Coordination services, also known as Wedding Day Management, because we love being able to swoop in and allow our clients to enjoy the day they spent so much time planning. To fund my business venture, I started assisting other local wedding planners in the industry to get more experience. I am happy to still be a part of those teams as one of their Lead Wedding Coordinators with Artful Events & Design and Buck & Rose Events. My business continues to grow, and we are excited for another busy season ahead!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road; I have had a hard time being able to dedicate 100% of my attention to my business because I have had to keep a part-time job to afford my business venture. I quit said part-time job last week and have been very excited to dedicate more time to building my brand. I also started my business in 2019, so COVID delayed many of my plans and development.
Thanks for sharing that. So, tell us more about your work next.
I specialize in wedding coordination; I am known for my attention to detail and how I care for my clients on the most important day of their lives. I am most proud of being a woman and having a Hispanic-owned business. Being bilingual has helped me provide the next level of care for my clients and my clients and their families.
How do you define success?
Success is being able to do something I am passionate about for work.
