Meet Robin Sedivy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Sedivy.

Robin Sedivy

Hi Robin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Pursuing music is like waking up every day on the edge of the Grand Canyon. It’s beautiful! It’s also very illogical and dangerous. Music is for everyone. It’s a birthright. However, allowing yourself to let it subsume you is frowned upon by society. If you don’t believe me, then you’ve never tried it. I understand better than most now that music is not a parasite. Coming to that understanding has allowed me to live in a new form of symbiosis with it. Instead of forcing myself to work in an environment where my talents weren’t fully realized, I have had the opportunity to learn from a Grammy-award-winning producer, get involved with talented artists from around the world, and work with some of the most inspiring and life-changing people I’ve ever met. While the pursuit of drumming was my original passion, it has evolved into music production. First, I had to take the leap of faith. That didn’t happen until the comforting embers of my office job were finally extinguished, and I found ways to capitalize on the skills I had learned pursuing this passion in music production. Doors have opened, and regardless of any acceptance or rejection I might experience as an entrepreneur, I am a complete individual, confidently tackling the myriad challenges I experience daily.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, not at all. However, when I returned to pursue music after a seven-year hiatus, I already knew that music was one of the most challenging career choices. For even the above-average artist, no legitimate protection or support is available as you navigate dead-end networks of scammers disguised as gatekeepers that only prey on an artist’s good-natured intentions. With these people making all the money, there’s no room for artists to access income, physical or mental health care, or any other benefits. It’s like choosing to go back and live 150 years ago in the Wild West.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Everything I create is very methodological, detail-oriented, and technical. My original artist brand is known for creating intricate and evocative soundscapes, almost always combined with a drum-forward and catchy beat. People love to listen to it while driving, working, cleaning, etc. From those who have gone the deepest into my catalog, I always hear back that they’re hearing new elements in the music every time they listen to it. I’m creating living, breathing records that carry the listener to another world, filled with mind-bending textures and innovative and transformative sounds. When making something by request, I can leverage an eclectic musical background and a profound technical grasp of sound to quickly elucidate the requester’s musical vision, even when the style or genre is different from what I create for myself.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a precocious youth living in a small, somewhat rural community. I loved to play baseball and always excelled academically. I eventually got into drumming around age 12-13 and started listening to different music. I joined a school and jazz band and played in an original grunge rock group. Throughout this time, my Dad was always creating, designing, and building by hand high-quality and beautiful commercial logos and large wooden signs for businesses in the surrounding community. “Commercial artwork” is a term he coined in my mind. I graduated with a degree in International Studies from Macalester College. During that time, I studied in South America and became fluent in Spanish. I also spent nearly seven years playing and touring with the Mac African Music Ensemble before getting married to the love of my life and settling down.
