Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Hauglid.
Hi, Becca; we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into piano education began in 2017 as a side job while I was a full-time teacher in public schools. My days started early, working on my website, emailing parents, responding to inquiries, and managing schedules before heading off to teach elementary music. After a full day at school, I would rush home to teach piano lessons in my small townhome, often continuing late into the evening. Despite the long hours, I was invigorated with excitement about Piano Lab. However, the relentless schedule eventually led to burnout, so in November 2020, I made the bold decision to quit my full-time job in public schools to focus entirely on Piano Lab.
This was a huge risk, especially since I found out I was pregnant just three months later, right at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic brought many challenges, but it also gave me the opportunity to pivot to online lessons and maintain my passion for teaching. Over time, I opened our first physical space and gradually built a team to support our growing number of students. Now, in Maple Grove, we continue to grow and bring on new students every month. Looking back, I never imagined I’d be here, but my vision has only just begun. We’re definitely going places!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely been a rollercoaster! Balancing the demands of parenting my two boys with the complexities of expanding a business has been one of the biggest challenges. Managing the growing pains associated with hiring and training new staff while ensuring financial stability—balancing class sizes, payroll, and other expenses—has been a constant act. We’ve also worked hard to improve our outreach and learn the intricacies of running a business. Maintaining a sustainable work-life balance to avoid burnout has been crucial.
Another challenge was being a solopreneur. It was daunting and often lonely. Constructive feedback from parents sometimes felt personal, and I had to learn to separate my self-worth from those moments. I worked on building my resilience and balancing work and life, eventually realizing the importance of trusting others to help me. With the support of my strategic partner, Hannah Baaker, who joined full-time in January 2024, and a fantastic team, I’ve found much more joy in my work. My spouse, Kai, has been incredibly supportive, especially recently, helping with studio maintenance and standing by me during the tough times. Our marriage has grown stronger through this journey, and having him by my side has made a significant difference. My kids see their mom working hard and making dreams come true, which is a wonderful model for them.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
At Piano Lab, we provide high-quality, inclusive piano education for children ages 4-14 using a modern lab-based format where each student has their own digital piano station. Our mission is to empower children through piano, building confidence and sparking creativity for life. We emphasize empathy and a shame-free environment where children feel safe and welcome. Growing up, I often felt nervous and ashamed when I hadn’t practiced enough, and I wanted to create a space where children never have to feel that way.
Our teachers undergo extensive training to ensure consistency and excellence even if a student switches teachers. We reward progress with badges and prizes, which helps boost motivation and confidence. Twice a year, we host formal recitals, giving students the opportunity to showcase their skills and growth. We use backing tracks during practice to make the experience fun and engaging, which also prepares students for playing collaboratively in the future. Through the Seesaw app, we maintain a digital portfolio of each student’s progress, keeping parents involved and informed.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any essential lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The COVID-19 crisis was a turning point for me, underscoring the importance of adaptability and resilience. Transitioning to online lessons allowed me to continue teaching during lockdowns while refining our digital capabilities. In a cramming effort while pregnant with my first son, I created over 800 videos to prepare for long-term online lessons. These videos turned into a major asset, and using the Seesaw app to share videos between lessons made learning piano easier and more accessible, helping students accelerate their progress. I’m committed to evolving with technology to provide the best resources for our students.
Throughout these challenges, having a strong support system proved invaluable. My long-distance best friend, Whitney Maxwell, who subbed online for me during my first maternity leave, was an incredible support. Whitney has since built her own studio, and we talk every day, sharing our experiences. Therapy played a crucial role in navigating rough patches. Finding community was essential; Facebook groups like the Studio Challenge group were my lifeblood in the early days, and now I gain valuable insights from business groups like CEO Entrepreneur. Investing in coaching and consulting helped me learn from others and grow the business.
The journey has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. Staying adaptable, seeking continuous growth, and having a supportive network were key to overcoming obstacles and achieving success. I’m deeply grateful for everyone who has supported me along the way, and I’m excited for the future of Piano Lab!
