Hidden Gems: Meet Nuku Vang of Nuku Vang Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nuku Vang

Hi Nuku, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been asked this question numerous of times and each time I don’t have any clue where to start.

Well, it’s undeniable that my passion for photography traces back to my early years. My father’s passion for capturing moments on film deeply influenced me. I vividly recall the excitement of picking up developed rolls from places like Walmart, and eagerly holding them up to the light to reveal the captured moments.

As technology evolved, my fascination transitioned to iPhone photography. I delved into countless tutorials on optimizing angles, zoom settings, and techniques. Some of my proudest photographic moments stemmed from my iPhone endeavors, igniting the spark for my journey into professional photography.

The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic coupled with the urge to unleash my creativity prompted me to invest in my first professional camera. It was a breath of fresh air amidst mandated work-from-home measures. Eager to escape cabin fever, I embarked on this new venture and haven’t looked back since!

Following a summer dedicated to mastering my craft, I finally mustered the courage to share my aspirations with my husband. His encouragement served as the final nudge I needed to take the leap into entrepreneurship. His straightforward question, “Are you actually going to start a business?” was the catalyst for action.

Fast forward a few months, and here I am, fully immersed in my photography business. While initially focused on portraits and family photography, serendipity led me to photograph my first wedding. It was a revelation—I fell head over heels for the entire process, from capturing candid moments to immortalizing family bonds. Departing the venue that evening, I was buzzing with euphoria, realizing that I was living my passion. I did it!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the major challenges I’ve encountered on my journey is defining myself—my brand, my voice, and my style. The abundance of talented photographers in the industry often leaves me doubting my own artistic merit. The prevalence of social media platforms like Instagram only exacerbates these feelings, as I find myself comparing my work to that of others and grappling with a sense of inadequacy. This struggle with self-doubt and comparison has been a persistent obstacle for me, even as I continue to evolve in my craft.

A quote by Ayn Rand that resonates with me is, “The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.” I love this quote because it has served as a reminder for me to be creative when I’m photographing weddings. Yes, I can get the “hero” shot but as soon as it’s captured, start having fun with the artistry. There’s nothing stopping me!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer first and I specialize in elopements and micro weddings, emphasizing diversity and inclusion–values that are prominently reflected in my portfolio. My photography style is characterized by a simple and collected approach, aiming to evoke tranquility and trust in my clients. With a documentary style, I capture moments as they unfold naturally, eschewing overly posed or stylized compositions. While maintaining an unobtrusive presence, I offer guidance when needed to ensure my clients look and feel their best.

An interesting aspect of my photography business is that I prioritize providing not just photos but also an enriching experience. Serving as a valuable resource for wedding photography, I offer recommendations for vendors, activities, and locations. Additionally, I assist in crafting personalized wedding day timelines so that my clients can fully be present on their wedding day.

What matters most to you?
Above all, what holds the utmost significance for me is ensuring my clients’ feel that I’ve contributed value to their wedding day, enriching their overall experience. And, of course, that they’re happy with and love their photos.
