Life & Work with Sophia Bronwyn of Minnetonka

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Bronwyn

Hi Sophia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello, I’m Sophia Bronwyn. I was born and raised in Minnesota. I grew up immersed in the vibrant dance community Minneapolis has to offer. Growing up surrounded by movement and expression, I developed a profound love for dance from an early age. It’s where I learned to appreciate the beauty of rhythm, grace, and storytelling through movement. In 2013 I joined Metropolitan Ballet and performed in ballets such as Swan Lake and Giselle. The following year I began teaching ballet to beginners of all ages.

Alongside my passion for dance, I’ve also discovered a love for photography. With my camera in hand, I capture moments that speak to me—moments of beauty, emotion, and spontaneity. Drawing from my experiences in the dance world, I infuse my photographs with the same energy and spirit that I’ve always admired. My background and knowledge of dance helps me guide my clients and create dynamic photos.

In addition to dance, I have a deep appreciation for live music and the electrifying atmosphere of concerts. Attending concerts has become a cherished pastime, where I immerse myself in the pulsating energy of the crowd and the soul-stirring performances on stage. It’s no surprise that my love for photography extends to concert photography. In 2023, I joined Voltage Live’s photography team covering live shows. I aim to capture the raw emotion and energy of live performances through my lens. Whether it’s the sweat glistening on a musician’s brow or the ecstatic faces of the audience, I strive to encapsulate the essence of the concert experience in every photograph.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While I’ve been taking photos as a hobby for a while, Bronwyn’s Rock Lens is less than a year old. I am incredible thankful for the support I’ve had from friends and family along the way. So far the majority of my clients have found me on instagram or artists have seen my work on Voltage Live. My next step will be creating a website that will allow me to expand my reach and showcase my talent.
Concert photography on its own is a world of rejection. To get in the door with concert photography you need a publication and to be on assignment. Even with a publication backing you, rejection happens. Media passes are limited and only a select few will be approved. Once in the door, you have the rule of shooting the first 3 songs. If I’m lucky to be at a venue with a photo pit, I can be up close with the artist and use those 3 songs to get spirited shots of everyone on stage. Each artist will have different lighting or lack of, and quality of photos is at the mercy of the venues lighting tech. I am usually able to counter balance the low lighting with a lens and camera that is well suited for low light.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My background in dance is my specialty that I share with the dancers I work with, either for classical headshots or fun action shots. Having the knowhow to create artist lines and unique photos helps set me apart from others in my field. My dynamic dancer session is a customizable photoshoot that is meant to cover a wide basis of shots for a dancers portfolio or family album. In the session we can cover headshots, poses needed for auditions, and explosive jumps. Action shots and jumps have been the most requested and equally the shot that takes the most patience and trust. I am more than willing to take the time with the dancer to get the photo just right.
With my concert photography it is always my goal to relive the night through my photos. I find it incredible important to capture crowd photos. It might look like a Where’s Waldo at times, but many have reached out being so thankful that I captured them living in the moment. What really sets me the apart the most is my passion for helping others get started in concert photography. I will always let people know what worked for me and how they can step into the music scene.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Photography is an art form, and creativity is key. It’s the little things matter in photography, the ability to see beauty in everyday scenes, and the skill to translate that vision into story-telling images. Patience and timing are incredible important in photography. Getting the perfect shot often requires waiting for the right moment, whether it’s waiting for the perfect lighting or for your subject to strike the right pose. Photography is also a field that’s constantly evolving, with new techniques and trends emerging all the time. I make it my goal to stay open-minded to learning and embrace change. I believe it is essential for achieving lasting success.
