Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Blackledge
Hi Crystal , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started photography 16 years ago, I was a 23 year old mother of three at the time looking for a creative outlet. As my sons grew older my passion for nature grew, I loved being outdoors with them and capturing them. I loved photographing families. I also started to document all of my encounters with wildlife around my home. We live on a big pond that inspires me, I spend a lot of time there and have taken most all of my favorite photographs on or near the pond. I now convince the families I photograph to get their feet wet, be curious in photographs and I try my best to document the beautiful lives of people in Minnesota in a natural way. I credit my whole photo journey to my inspiring sons, Logan, Lucas and Landon who taught me to love the outdoors.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It took many years without a lot of inquiries or bookings to become a full time photographer. I often felt like I would never have the business I dreamed of. Slow growth for me created my dream job. I now have so many families I’m connected with and love. I sometimes get told a mom is expecting before anyone else! My relationships with my clients is the best thing ever!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My photography work with families and in nature both have the same feeling of peace and tranquility. I love capturing connections between families or connection with the earth. I always go with the flow of every photoshoot and let it naturally evolve. My photoshoots are laid back, relaxing and fun. Often times dads say, that was actually fun! They’re surprised because the stigma of boring and long photoshoots. My friends and fellow photographers say they know my work when they see it. That makes me smile. When I’m not taking photos I’m decorating my country home, tending to my bees, loving on my pets or sitting on the patio eating one of my husbands home cooked meals, usually piping hot because they’re just that good.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Yes! Reach out to someone you look up to. They may be busy and blow you off and that’s ok, try another! If you can afford a mentorship do that. If you can’t. Ask if you can buy a photographer lunch and pick their brain. I’ve mentored a handful of wonderful people. It’s fun to see the light in their eyes when things click.
