Today we’d like to introduce you to Travon Amor Mitchell
Hi Travon amor, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
So as a kid, I used to love playing football, that’s all I knew. Until one day I started playing basketball with my little brothers and cousins. They were better than me, since they knew the basics. But I loved the game so much! So I decided, you know what? I’m going to learn how to play and this is what I’m sticking too. So I began learning the basics, started playing on a team for the eagles basketball in middle school. Made the team all 3 years in middle school, with little knowledge of the game besides the basics. I began to realize I was naturally gifted with this sport. So I pursued it through high school. Began playing on the B team at Apple Valley High school as a freshman. Sophomore year came around and basketball tryouts came, and I got cut from the team! It was devastating to me, it hurt to see other names on the paper and not see mines. So I sort of gave up on the idea of pursuing my basketball dream of being in the NBA. Still attended basketball games but never got back into playing. Got cut from a few AAU teams, and that hurt me even more. So I stopped playing overall. I wasn’t academically good in school, because I never was getting hands on practice or tutors. So I had to transfer to an alternative school at Dakota County Technical College. I graduated high school and began college at Minneapolis Community & Technical College for psychology. Kind of found out that wasn’t my thing. So I stopped attending college. A few years go by of going job to job, working for a Temp Agency, and realized that I don’t want to work a 9-5 job for the rest of my life, and that I have a love for basketball to the point, even if I’m not on the court, I still want to figure out a way to be apart of the game and make it my life duty. So I began practicing again, going to basketball open gyms and playing against the best people. Started to realize “hey you’re way better then you used to think, get your confidence back up and chase your dream”. And that’s exactly what I did. I worked out everyday, trained everyday, started networking with basketball companies, with other basketball players that were better then me. So that I could get the best knowledge and be the best basketball player on and off the court that I could be. Started to figure out the intricate’s around the game and began playing the best basketball of my life! So I decided you know what? Let me take a shot at being a content creator, I graduated 2019, so when I first started playing for my high school, my era never really had cameras all over, people to record and post on social media. So I decided since I don’t have much film or pictures of me, I will just make film and pictures of me, to help get noticed. Show off my talent to others around the world that haven’t seen me play before, in hopes that it would open up opportunities for me. I, then decided to create my own company called habitual hoop minds, to spread my knowledge and love for the game, to other aspiring pro basketball players. I grew up in a family that played/plays basketball, so it wasn’t hard for me to gravitate towards this idea. Now I am a pro basketball player, about to go play in Paris in January of 2025, got invited to Spain this month to play, and now I’m here! And now I love what I do, even if I don’t get paid for it! Now that landed me here where I am today! I still have a long way to go, but I came a long way and I am very proud of myself.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a pretty smooth road, mainly because I am doing what I love every single day of my life. Whether that’s working as a coach full time, to playing basketball on the court, or training with my personal trainees. Of course there are ups and downs that comes with it. But that’s apart of life so I learned to take any loss, and turn it into a lesson. And never dwell on a loss ever. That’s the only way you can become a boss and successful at what you do! The most difficult struggle for me, was not having a healthy support system, nor having the right equipment or train behind my drive to pursue my dreams. Never got to any training facilities or had any personal trainers to teach me little details. So I just had to learn as I went, and teach myself by watching videos, looking at other trainers videos on YouTube or instagram reels. And that taught me that even with the little things that you got, you can make the most out of them. It never mattered to me what I had or was given, I was going to get it done! And I never was satisfied. I maybe good but there’s always someone better, so I had to keep training and get my mindset too “no one’s better then me”. And that’s what got me to where I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a sports coach. I specialize in teaching kids how to play sports. And the sport varies, from soccer, to flag football, floor hockey, cheer, basketball, dodgeball, P.E. games, etc. I am known for being a basketball coach and basketball personal trainer, also known for being a basketball player, as I am still an aspiring basketball pro. I am most proud of how far I’ve learned with teaching and training, by learning on my own. I never had any professional help with much of the stuff I learned. So I pat myself on the back for learning these things on my own timing. What sets me apart from others, I feel as if I have a genuine love for coaching, especially for basketball, and I’m the oldest of 4, with 2 younger cousins that lived with my parents and us, so I was the oldest of 6 growing up basically. I say that to say, kids naturally gravitate towards me, even if I’m not paying attention to them. It’s crazy, for example, I was playing basketball at a court by a park, and these kids came up saying “how don’t you miss are you Steph curry?”. I laughed and humbly said “no but I’ll be better then him soon enough”. They laughed and asked if they could shoot around with me for a little bit, so I let them take over and play basketball. Let them have fun. I think I just have a genuine glow on me, and I am very charismatic, funny and straight toward also. And it all evens out to make me the best person I can be.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
That patience goes a very long way, in all aspects of life. And that I have to take 100% accountability for everything that happens in life. Not just the stuff I decide to do. But everything that involves me, there’s always a way to take accountability for. Don’t take anything for granted. And lastly, do not dwell on the past, being stuck in the past, takes away today’s peace. And that’s a major thing to remember in life.
