Meet Courtney Hicks of Anoka County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Hicks

Hi Courtney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
To make a long story short, I was burnt out climbing the corporate latter and decided I needed a change of pace. I quit my job, went back to school and got my realtor license and was just about to start selling when the pandemic hit. I was so grateful for my husband’s income and the flexibility for me to stay home with our kids to homeschool them. That whole experience changed my perspective on literally everything. My passion for essential oils and low toxic living amplified, I started selling Young Living and posted diffuser blends and DIY recipes on Pinterest. It has snowballed from there. My husband and I dove head first into creating a small homestead, built a garden that has doubled since that time and has truly become my happy space. I now look forward to teaching my followers how to garden on my social media channels while feeding my family homegrown food right from our backyard.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
With any new learning experience there are many struggles and moments you consider stepping away. For me, gardening and growing plants in general was not my thing at all. I used to joke I could kill a fake plant. I had to learn a lot and many lessons by trial and error, but that’s why I’ve come to love gardening so much. It’s rarely permanent and so forgiving. One fail can be someone else’s success. My garden has become a place where I can find myself when I need to lose all the background noise of this thing we call life.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Naturally Hicks is for all those who want to learn about gardening, homesteading on a small scale, essential oils, low toxic living and my everyday life as a mama of 3. I really enjoy teaching others what I’m passionate about. I would love to grow this business and extend my social media presence with garden consulting. It’s a dream that is in the works. I can’t think of a better way to spend my days than helping others create, design, execute and plant their garden space. This space I have created 4 years ago is growing and doors are opening. I am proud of myself, for showing up even when it’s hard and I don’t feel like it, that I have stayed diligent and true to myself.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
There has been a huge trend in gardening and homesteading since the pandemic. I see this trend increasing over the next several years to come. I think people are starting to see that you can make a large impact with a small space, you don’t need several acres of land to have a garden or start a homestead. I would love to be apart of that movement, teaching others everything I know and cheering on the sidelines.
