Daily Inspiration: Meet Magnolia Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Magnolia Taylor

Hi Magnolia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started pottery in a high school art class. I had a fantastic teacher that gave me free rein. I was able to explore and grow without fear of judgment or a bad grade. I was blessed with the resources to make a home studio and grow my business. I am honored today to do pottery during my summers back home (from college).

This year I also added the Clay for a Cause program. Over 40 Million children around the world are living in severe food poverty. Many starving children will eat mud, or clay “cookies” in an effort to quell hunger. These “cookies” are simply dried discs of the very dirt they walk on. The Clay Ceramics donates 10% of profits to Feed My Starving Children, a non-profit organization that provides nutritionally complete meals for starving, malnourished and hungry people. We use clay for art, so children have food to eat.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were times where I didn’t know if I could continue to throw. I didn’t have a wheel. I couldn’t buy an expensive kiln. But thankfully my teacher gave me a broken wheel I paid to fix up. My mom supported my artistic passion and allowed me to convert an open room to a home studio. Nearly all my success wouldn’t have been possible without my amazing mama!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Scandinavia has successfully blended its existing organic landscape with fresh modern design. This almost paradoxical cohesion has created a region of natural and man-made beauty. My ceramics attempt to capture the fascinating beauty of Scandinavia. My entire creative process has been molded by my faith in Jesus. Isaiah 64:8 has been the heartbeat of my artistic journey: “We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”

I am most proud of my ability to start a small business while in high school. I went through some deep familial suffering and health issues during high school, and I am so grateful that pottery was a way to process my pain and create beauty in a season that felt ugly.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
No, I started after Covid.
