Meet Dylan Sylvester of Horizon Drone Services LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Sylvester

Hi Dylan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My background is in mechanical engineering, specifically nuclear power. I’ve spent the last 15 years in the industry working on various reactors. Recently I took on a new role that afforded me the opportunity to think and work a bit more creatively. I found this creativity to be a bit freeing, compared to rigid structure that typically proliferates in nuclear power.

As part of this new role, I was given the opportunity to obtain my Part 107 commercial drone operators license. I found myself enjoying flying more and more, every time I put the drone the air. So I decided to start a business of my own, Horizon Drone Services LLC, doing aerial videography and photography in the Twin Cities.

Starting this business has allowed me to get out and fly on a much more frequent basis. Taking photos of homes for real estate listings, unique buildings, and points of interest in the cities has allowed me to flex my creativity muscles in a very satisfying way. Learning new ways to film, new creative methods of editing, and honing my flying skills has been a wonderful way to build this business.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As with any new business, getting clients will always be a struggle. I have friends that have helped me along the way, passing around my business cards and spreading awareness by word of mouth. I can’t say it’s been smooth, but I’m confident in my abilities to grow and maintain this business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Horizon Drone Services is an aerial photography and videography company in the Twin Cities. We primarily work with real estate agents to provide aerial photographs of properties, homes, and businesses for listings. These aerial photos provide unique views of the properties and really draw people into the listing, and can highlight not only the home itself, but the surrounding neighborhood and landscape.

We also offer inspection services. Hard to reach places like roofs and chimneys typically go unobserved for decades. Getting an eye on those elevated places can help identify small problems before they become big problems.

As promotional material, we also film local unique buildings and points of interest, making short videos of interesting places in the cities. Locations have included the Cathedral of St Paul, Landmark Plaza, “The Calling” sculpture at Allianz Stadium, and many of the beautiful lakes in the cities such as Bde Maka Ska, Lake of the Isles, Cedar Lake, etc.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I spend a great deal of time listening to podcasts and reading books. I enjoy learning, so when it comes to consuming media, I enjoy topics that can teach me things. Whether it be new skills, technology, history, or anything else, I simply enjoy the process of learning new things.
