Today we’d like to introduce you to Teegan Schroeder
Hi Teegan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m 29 years old, living in Victoria, MN with my wonderful husband and our two cats Ollie and Petunia. I graduated from Winona State University and currently work full-time in TV advertising. Outside of work, I love spending time in the kitchen cooking up new dishes and exploring new restaurants whenever I can. Creativity is a big part of who I am, whether it’s painting, drawing, or designing florals. I also enjoy thrifting and discovering hidden treasures. In the spring, you’ll often find me at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, soaking in the beauty and inspiration around me. Floral design has become one of my favorite creative outlets since doing my own wedding flowers in 2020, and it brings so much joy and fulfillment to my life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the most exciting yet challenging aspects of being a florist is working with flowers as living, breathing materials. Each flower has its own unique care requirements, and learning how to properly handle and maintain different types has been a constant journey of discovery. From understanding which blooms thrive in certain climates, to figuring out how to keep delicate flowers fresh and vibrant for a wedding day, it’s a detailed process. The challenge doesn’t end there—since flowers are perishable, timing is everything. There’s an art to ensuring they’re at their peak on the big day, and that often means making adjustments on the fly. Some flowers might not open as expected, or the weather may cause issues during transport—so I’ve learned the importance of quick problem-solving and adaptability. On wedding days, there’s always a bit of unpredictability, but I thrive on finding creative solutions to ensure the florals are flawless no matter what comes our way. It’s this balance of planning and improvisation that keeps me constantly engaged and inspired as a florist.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Ever since I can remember, flowers have captivated me—and honestly, who doesn’t love them? But it wasn’t until I planned my own wedding in 2020, taking on the challenge of doing all the florals myself, that I truly fell head over heels for the florist industry. I dove into sourcing flowers, learning how to care for them, and working tirelessly to bring my vision to life. Reflecting back, I realize I may have bitten off more than I could chew, and hiring a florist would have saved me a lot of stress! But this experience sparked something deep inside me—a passion that I just couldn’t ignore.
After my wedding, I found myself unable to stop creating with flowers. I’d buy blooms from Trader Joe’s and practice making bouquets, sometimes asking friends to slip into fancy dresses so I could photograph my creations. With each arrangement, my confidence grew. I began receiving requests to design flowers for weddings and events, and with every new project, I fell even more in love with the art of floral design. There’s something so magical about contributing to someone’s most special day.
As the requests kept coming, Very Violet was born. My floral business is a tribute to my incredible grandmother, Violet, whose beautiful garden in Bemidji was a place of joy and inspiration for me as a child. I spent countless summers with my grandparents, watering flowers and marveling at the natural beauty surrounding us. Their love for gardening planted those first seeds and it feels right to honor her through this business.
My journey has been filled with amazing opportunities to learn and grow. Freelancing for talented florists like Madeline King from Sage and Rae Floral has been invaluable. Assisting with weddings alongside her has not only honed my skills but also reignited my inspiration for the craft. It’s in these experiences that I’ve discovered just how much goes into floral design—from consultations with brides to carefully crafting proposals, sourcing and caring for the freshest flowers, creating intricate designs, and executing flawless setups. It’s so much more than just arranging flowers; it’s about curating a moment of beauty and joy for someone’s most memorable day.
One of the biggest blessings of this journey is the support I’ve had along the way—especially from my amazing mother. I definitely inherited my creative spark from her and having her as my right-hand woman during wedding projects has made the process even more special. Together, we handle everything from the delicate details of design to logistics like packaging and transportation. I couldn’t imagine doing it without her by my side!
This past wedding season, 2024, has been my biggest and most exciting yet. Every year, I learn more, challenge myself in new ways, and stay inspired by the evolving trends in floral design. I’m constantly in awe of the incredible brides I get to work with—they bring so much joy to my work. And there’s nothing quite like the moment when I hand over the bridal bouquet. That feeling of delivering something so personal and meaningful? It’s pure magic.
