Today we’d like to introduce you to Kory Barnes
Hi Kory, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was stuck inside my room during Covid-19; bored out of my mind, uninterested in my previous hobbies, and craved something other than Tiktoks and movies. I needed a creative outlet to help me express my emotions and thoughts, but nothing struck a chord with me. However, my best friend Kenny Sanchez, also known as, “Ken2icey,” is known for producing music of his own and doing some local DJ gigs. I was intrigued by his music and style. I called Kenny, asking what steps I should I take in order to create my own music. He quickly invited me over to his house for a studio session, and from that moment blossomed the beginning of what is now, iamKiarán.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This journey has been a blast and I’ve created lots of great memories along the way. But just like life, pursing music has its ups and downs. The biggest challenges I face all stem from, self doubt. Simply overthinking how or what I should do as an artist, comparing and contrasting my work with others, or even questioning if all the work and effort I put into my craft will go unnoticed or not.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
All of my music is created form within my small college apartment. Growing up, my family couldn’t afford the nicest things. Therefore, when I first started to create music, I tried my best to keep those values in play. Only intending to make music with free or cheap resources. I knew I couldn’t afford studio time, let alone pay someone to make beats for me. That’s when I decided to start doing everything by myself rather than rely on someone else to do it for me. Being versatile is what separates me from so many other musicians, the ability to sing and rap, while also producing beats, mixing and mastering tracks, and engineering vocals. My goal has always been to inspire those who may not have much to pursue their dreams with free resources available to them.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk-taking is hardest lesson I’ve had to learn while pursing music. I’ve lost a countless amount of friends due to sacrificing time in order to get projects done. Some family members have exclaimed their doubts about how much time I’ve dedicated towards my music. I could go down the list of parties, sporting events, weddings, and funerals I’ve missed due to pursing my dreams. Rolling the dice and taking a chance on myself is terrifying, especially when I don’t know if its going to workout or not. But when it’s all said and done, at least I can say I tried rather than no doing nothing at all.
