Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Murphy
Hi Meg, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Yes! I’m the oldest of four kids, grew up in the Minneapolis area and spent most of my free time in high school doing ballet, playing tennis or sneaking into R-rated movies. After graduating from Iowa State, I lived in San Francisco for a few years, got married to my husband, Andrew, and am now back in Minneapolis with two daughters, Nicole and Clara. I still love an R-rated movie, but also reading, traveling, cooking and spending time with friends.
Professionally, the last fifteen years has been a mix of helping to create and launch a mentoring non-profit, and media strategy and planning at a few different agencies – all with an emphasis on managing teams, developing sustainable systems and overseeing projects from strategic development through execution. While a bit of a winding road, the through line in all of my jobs has been people. I love building relationships and collaborating with people as they learn, grow and discover more of who they want to be and what they want to accomplish, and being part of making it happen.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t know anyone that has had an entirely smooth road in their career. It takes time and experience to figure out what is energizing, meaningful and fulfilling. That only comes through trial and error, learning more about yourself, persevering when things get hard but also knowing when to be done, and sometimes starting in an entirely new direction even if you don’t know where it will lead.
One recurring struggle for me has been clarifying what’s next when a role, company or industry has run its course. I’ve never been someone who had a clear vision for my career or a five year plan, so learning to take the next right step and trust where it will lead has been a process. It was much scarier when I left my first teaching job than when I left my last agency job, but it always requires courage and resilience.
I have learned that if the goal is to learn from your experiences and contribute to making the world a better place through your unique skills and talents, then no time is wasted. It’s more about being in the moment, trusting the process and being willing to get out of your comfort zone in order to explore what’s possible.
As you know, we’re big fans of Meg Murphy LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a fractional integrator and work primarily with female entrepreneurs, collaborating with them to develop a clear vision for their business, define measurable goals over time, and create systems and processes so things run smoothly and effectively. I work with women across a variety of industries, from entertainment travel to dog training, interior design, and occupational therapy – and customize my services and hours based on each founder’s unique needs and challenges.
Running your own business can be lonely and overwhelming, so one of the unique aspects of my role is to create space for entrepreneurs to process through business decisions, identify gaps in their services or workflow, and come up with new solutions supported by clear deadlines and accountability. I’m also known for being a team player, available to wear a variety of hats, saying it like it is, able to navigate the hard things, and articulate things in a clear and concise way.
It’s an unbelievable honor to partner with women in striving to reach their goals and making a difference in their industries and communities.
What makes you happy?
I am happiest professionally when a client and I are able to solve an ongoing issue or make a new idea come to life. One of those moments happened with a new client. Her initial goal was to more clearly define the terms and pay within a current work partnership so her contribution was being compensated fairly. Within a month, she’d realized she wanted to get her general contractor’s license and start her own business. We collaborated to clarify how to communicate with her partner, build a study plan for her certification exam, and document the business plan and client engagement process for her new company. The day she got her general contractor’s license was such a validating moment for her – and a meaningful one for me too!
