Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Mathieu
Hi Melissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I was about eight years old, I’ve known I wanted to be an interior designer. My mom worked for a high-end commercial construction company and brought me along for “Take Your Daughter to Work Day.” She placed me in the interior design department, and I was completely captivated by the creative process. That moment sparked a lifelong passion that’s led me to where I am today.
I went on to earn my bachelor’s degree in interior design and gained experience in a variety of roles, from working with big-box retail companies to collaborating with high-end contractors and exploring commercial design. I also honed my skills in high-end interior decorating before finally deciding to venture out on my own. Today, I’m proud to run a full-service interior design business that combines all the expertise I’ve gained over the years.
My work is focused on creating authentic, curated designs tailored to my clients’ needs, with an emphasis on sustainability and a stress-free experience. I handle everything from initial concepts and 3D renderings to project management, bringing my clients’ visions to life while building lasting relationships along the way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Here’s a refined version of your response:
It’s definitely not been a smooth road, but every challenge has helped me grow. One of the biggest hurdles I’ve faced is overcoming my natural shyness. Building confidence to put myself out there, network, collaborate with others, and ask questions has been a huge personal and professional journey.
Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve also faced the reality that schools don’t teach you how to run a business day-to-day. Starting and growing my design firm has been a lot of trial and error. I’m constantly learning—whether it’s about refining processes, connecting with clients, or balancing creativity with business operations.
On top of that, my husband and I recently purchased a roll-off company, which has been an entirely different experience. Diving into a new industry has been a mix of excitement and challenge as I navigate unfamiliar territory and expand my skill set. Despite the ups and downs, I wouldn’t trade the lessons and growth for anything.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business, Melissa Mathieu Designs, is a full-service interior design firm based in Princeton, Minnesota. I specialize in residential remodels, new construction, and 3D renderings, offering a seamless experience from concept to completion. I serve clients throughout Minnesota and can also work virtually nationwide with other designers, builders, and developers for 3D rendering projects. My goal is to create authentic, curated designs tailored to each client’s unique style and needs, ensuring every project is both functional and beautiful.
What sets my business apart is my detail-oriented approach and commitment to try and incorporate sustainability. I work with reliable tradespeople and incorporate eco-friendly materials whenever possible, helping my clients create spaces that align with their values. My clients appreciate the personalized, stress-free process I provide, handling everything from initial concepts, bids, drawings, and selections to product ordering and overseeing construction until the final reveal.
Brand-wise, I’m proud of creating a business that’s approachable, vibrant, and innovative. I want my clients to feel excited and confident knowing they’re in good hands.
If you’re looking for someone who will genuinely listen, collaborate, and bring your vision to reality while taking the stress off your plate, Melissa Mathieu Designs is here for you.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest piece of advice for anyone starting out is this: when it feels right, take the leap—and don’t look back. There will be days when you feel like giving up, but the key is to keep pushing forward. Progress is rarely linear, and persistence is what will keep you moving through the tough times.
Another important lesson I’ve learned is to work on yourself just as much as you work on your business. Maintaining a stable and healthy mindset is crucial because your mental health directly impacts your ability to keep your business afloat.
Finally, surround yourself with a group of like-minded friends or mentors who genuinely support you. These are the people who will let you vent, encourage you when you need it, and even open doors to new opportunities. Having a strong support system makes all the difference.
Starting your own business is a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey—just keep going, and trust the process.
