Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Guntar.
Hi Jocelyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Ello ! I am not British!!!! I see you’d get confused by how i opened this up. I’m Jocelyn Guntar an electronic music producer based in Boise, Idaho. Started making music only a little over a year ago and taught myself all the basics i needed to make Techno/House. DJ Eve comes through the club i work at in Boise a lot and saw me play so she got me booked in the city of Minnianapolis and it was my first show outside of Idaho :p
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel like i’m still very in the midst of the beginning of it all. So it’s still bumpy. it’s a BUMPY ROAD man you know what i mean? I just started doing it and haven’t stopped and now it’s like a big goal and junk but like i gotta call my parents every other week being like “no one came to my show booohooooo” and they’re like “dawg you just started”. So i’m kinda winging it still and have not entered the paved roads quite yet tehehe
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
So as soon as i started i just started releasing music, right? I didn’t let too much time to fine tune i was impatient and so my first couple releases sound BALLS and nothing like house or techno it’s just weird electronic music that isn’t mixed or mastered well and whatever. BUT then i did a fun little project that was very inspired from some French House that then lead to some more of my modern Tech/House style of my first album. But my biggest inspos definitely come from the 90s Detroit/Berlin scene, the early days of Techno and deep deep House cuts of even Chicago or San Fran and i find my music going more towards that style a lot more than the Tech/House. As i finished writing that sentence, a feeling dawned on me that i kinda said nothing, pure gibberish, or rather didn’t say anything much, period. Anyway, that’s what i’m up to
What matters most to you?
This is very broad question, i can’t do those very well im a very specific question type of fella. if it regards making music then i got a answer and ill answer as such:
In any art form you get into im very big about learning all of its history and where it comes from. i see a lot of people dont do that, and to me it just feels like they might not understand entirely what they’re making. Subjectively i believe you have to learn the history and learn the people who came before who made this thing a thing in the first place who are the entire reason one is into this thing to know where this thing is heading into the future.
