Life & Work with Grace Moden of Saint Peter, MN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Moden

Hi Grace, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My interest in makeup began in when I was in middle school. I started to educate myself primarily through YouTube beauty gurus. As my passion continued to grow, all of my friends became my first canvases. I remember the people closest to me suggesting that I look into a career in makeup, but I never expected it to blossom into what it has today. A close family friend of mine later connected me with a bridal team during my sophomore year of college, I met with the owner, and she began to show me the ropes. I quickly realized that I was in the wrong field as an elementary education major, and ended up taking a huge risk as I dropped out of college during my junior year. I ended up opting for cosmetology school instead. Throughout the following wedding seasons, my books began to fill and I found my groove. As an extrovert, connecting with others while making them feel beautiful feels like the perfect combo. Today, I stay busy servicing over 40 weddings annually, and I run my own business at twenty-two years old.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If there’s one thing about being a young entrepreneur, its that you have learn how to run a business from scratch. Luckily, I have had so much support from fellow professionals. There is so much room for error, and at the end of the day, you have to make the right calls for your business.

Additionally, makeup is extremely personal, which can feel discouraging as a new artist. Inevitably will not be able to please every personal who sits in your chair. There is no right or wrong way to do makeup, and everyone does it differently. Strong consultation has been a game changer, and this takes time to get down. I start each session with a series of questions, and I believe that has a huge factor regarding my artistic growth. My problem solving skills have majorly developed over the years and I know feel confident that I am equip to handle anything.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Bridal makeup, and primarily service weddings. I am known for my soft glam, skin like style. I feel as if my drive sets me apart, as makeup is my biggest passion. I prioritize how my brides feel, and watching a client light up at the final result will never get old for me. Getting the privilege to do a brides makeup on wedding day is truly so special, and I am constantly improving the experience I give my brides each year.

I am most proud of the fact that I built this business from the ground up. I have learned so much over the past few years, and its amazing to watch that come to life. I remember feeling so worried that I would have trouble filling my books, and it feel so good to know that I know have more demand than I can handle on my own.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have been so lucky to have the most incredible support system. I was nervous to tell my parents I was dropping out of college so late into my college career. I was expecting them to try to talk me out of it, but instead they gave me full support and believed that I was capable from the start.

My friends have also played a huge role in my success. Anytime I have needed a model for a shoot, wanted to try a new technique, or needed support, my friends have been there to give me anything I needed.

Additionally, my Fiance has always been a huge supporter. When we started dating, he quickly became accustomed to my early weekend mornings. He now cleans my brushes with me and helps me get organized for my weddings. My fellow makeup artists know that cleaning brushes is arguably the worst part of this job.

Finally, my fellow beauty professionals have made such an impact on my knowledge and skill set. Its been so helpful to learn from others in the industry. Starting out, I had a million questions and was lucky enough to be able to learn from some incredibly talented hair and makeup artists.
