Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Knych
Hi Kristin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After working at a couple of different design jobs I decided to venture out on my own/do freelance. My house was small at the time so in 2013 I decided to open a store that would be two fold – feature local artists in the front and house my studio in the back. That was the beginning of doodle bird design + gifts. 12 years later I’m still here helping promote locally made goods and creating crafty goodness myself.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a small business owner always has its struggles. The biggest was the pandemic when we were shut down and the slow build back up to people feeling safe to go out and shop again. Luckily the neighborhood is super supportive and makes an effort to support all our fantastic local businesses.

I’m a graphic designer with 25+ years in the business. I specialize in print/pattern + product development in the stationery/gift industry. The most fun is seeing my art on products in the store knowing people are going to buy/use them in their everyday lives.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Find a group that resonates with you and be active. I’ve joined a couple of online groups that are supper supportive and very generous when it comes to sharing information/their experiences in the industry and what it’s like to be a full-time artist in general.
