Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Soukkala
Hi Amber, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
About 2 years ago now, my 87 year old great aunt decided it was time to de-clutter her crafting items but she wanted to hand down one of the many crafts that she learned over the years to both my sister and I. My sister settled on embroidery and she had taught me how to knit as a child, so I decided to have her “re-teach” me. We both dove into our crafts in our free time and eventually my mom convinced me to start an instagram page.
For awhile, I used it mostly to test knit and follow other knitters, small yarn stores, and indie dyers. That quickly grew and again my mom convinced me to apply to sell some hats at the new Smith and Trade in Crosby Minnesota. Over time, we joined in on some small markets, got organized with a basic website, and networked with a lot of different small businesses. My sister and mom helped every step of the way with knitting, so eventually we talked my sister into joining in some markets with her sweaters. Its pretty quickly become a family affair for us!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There has been a lot of trial and error, as with doing anything new. But we have been supported by our friends, family, and many, many, many other wonderful small businesses along the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a sister team (with lots of help from our family) who create unique and custom knitwear and embroidered items. Our hand knit hats are made from high quality wool, with an emphasis on hand dyed yarns. We do our best to support other small businesses from the yarn to the leather tags (made in Minnesota by Birch and Cider in Rogers!).
Our embroidered children’s sweaters are also fully customizable for every season, color, and name. We pride ourselves on creating something unique and personal for everyone!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t be afraid to go for it! There are so many other creatives in our communities that love to answer questions, follow your pages, or set you on the right path with your business. I know I was so nervous putting our work out into the world but have been met with nothing but support, fun, and awesome people that support these small artists and ventures!
