Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Kong
Hi Marina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My parents immigrated to America, and as I grew up, I knew what it was like to go without. My family was accustomed to the stability of a regular 9-to-5 job, but we broke free from the mindset that taking risks wasn’t an option. By doing so, we showed our community that with perseverance and determination, anything is achievable.
Growing up, I didn’t have a clear career path in mind. After high school, I briefly attended community college before dropping out and starting a career in the beauty industry. I quickly advanced from beauty advisor to supervisor and eventually operations manager. However, I soon lost interest in retail and realized I didn’t want to pursue further leadership roles. I left my job and started serving, which gave me more free time and allowed me to save money. My partner and sister Maly Kong, who already has one successful business, (Kong’s Kitchen- Southeast Asian cuisine) and I decided to take a leap of faith and open a salon together, despite having no prior experience in the cosmetic industry we are here today, building an on growing establishment.

Entrepreneurship is a challenging journey. As your own boss, you wear multiple hats – marketer, tax advisor, accountant, HR manager, and more. Behind the glamour of success lies a daunting reality: navigating daily obstacles, uncertainty about securing customers and supporters, and investing heavily, financially, mentally, and physically. Once committed, there’s no turning back; the only option is to push forward and build a thriving business.

Our mission is to uplift and empower clients, boosting their confidence and self-esteem. Looking ahead, we aspire to evolve into a med spa, further expanding our services and expertise.

Growing up in a family that are immigrants starting life from nothing made taking risks a daunting prospect. It was tempting to stick with what I knew, staying comfortable in my routine and community. However, I realized that playing it safe would only lead to a mediocre life, and that wasn’t enough for me.
Even while working, I had multiple jobs and income streams to maintain my desired lifestyle. This experience ultimately led me to take a leap of faith, quitting my stable corporate job after eight years. It was a scary decision, especially with two kids to provide for, but I knew it was necessary for my career growth and personal fulfillment.
Leaving behind the security of a stable job with benefits was intimidating, but I weighed my options and chose to take the risk. It’s been a game-changer – I work less, earn more, and am finally doing something I love. Looking back, it’s clear that quitting my job was the best decision I ever made. This led me to so much more opportunity in my Carrer path and personal life expereinces.
