Hidden Gems: Meet Sandy & Bill Stevens of Sable Inn Bed & Breakfast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy & Bill Stevens

Hi Sandy & Bill, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2006, we purchased an historic home in Foley, MN. The house was built in 1901 by John Foley, the man the town is named for. The house was to be moved or demolished to make room for a parking lot. It was in need of a lot of work, but the basic structure was in great shape. John Foley was a lumber baron and did not skimp when constructing this house. We moved the house from in town to our property in November 2007 and immediately started a major remodel project. The remodel took us about 10 years since we did most of the labor ourselves. We restored the house to look as it might have when it was built, including the furnishings. In 2017, we officially became a bed & breakfast, named Sable Inn. We have 5 rooms available and serve a full breakfast every day of the week. In 2022, we added an event space since we’d had so many requests for intimate weddings. We are located 1 mile west of Foley. On our property, we have several gardens, a fountain, a pergola, a wood sauna and a small sand beach on a 4-acre private pond stocked with fish.
We live next door to the Inn, allowing guests to feel more at home, but close enough so we are available if needed.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When taking on project of this size, there are always challenges. We were able to overcome them and learned along the way. Since we opened the bed & breakfast we have had more rewards than challenges.

We’ve been impressed with Sable Inn Bed & Breakfast, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a bed & breakfast offering lodging and a full breakfast each morning. We have 5 rooms available, one of which is a small apartment with a kitchenette. Not only do we provide lodging, we also have an event space that can hold events up to 100 guests that we call the Carriage House. Our Carriage House is handicap accessible and has 2 restrooms in it.
Last year we were awarded a Silver Award in Hotels, Inns and Bed & Breakfasts from St. Cloud Community Votes as well as Top Pick in Wedding Venues. We have been featured in St. Cloud Shines and Central Minnesota Bridal magazine and are proud of our consistent 5 star ratings.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I guess you could say we were risk takers. Anyone that would move a house with no real plan in mind and turn it into a successful business had to have taken a risk. You need to take risks to get rewards.
