Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Jones
Hi Ryan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my building career at a young age in damage restoration. It was here I first saw how a remodel can transform a house. Following my apprenticeship in damage restoration, I went on to attend Miami University. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Sports Studies with a Minor in Business Management. I attended Miami University on a hockey scholarship and was the captain of the Redhawks. I always found myself spending each off-season working in the construction industry.
Following college, I had an 11 year professional hockey career in the NHL and Europe. During this time, my wife and I built our investment real estate portfolio which involved numerous remodels and the experience surrounding the progression of a job site. I was starting to think about life after hockey and knew being tied to a desk wasn’t for me. I wanted to own my own company.
About a year before I retired, I was on a fishing trip in Northern Minnesota, when my now business partner, Mike Youngs, approached me about starting our own residential construction company. Mikan Custom Homes was born on a boat in the water, with a shared vision of building the highest-quality homes and fostering strong relationships.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Safe to say we have had challenges in our first 6 years of growing our business. We started Mikan in the Fall of 2019. Covid 19 Lockdowns went into effect in March of 2020. Within our first year we faced lockdowns, supply chain delays and uncertain housing markets. Others than that, we are like all other residential companies. We deal with times of being busy, slow times and everything in between.

Mikan Custom Homes’ mission is to deliver quality custom craftsmanship with an emphasis on details. We strive to build personal relationships with our clients while creating spaces that are intimate, functional, and timeless.
What makes us different than a lot of other residential builders is that one of our owners project manages all of our projects. What we feel that offers is direct communication with the decision makers. When something needs to be sorted out, it can be done in real time without delays in communication.
Any big plans?
Our goal as a company is to continue to root ourselves in the west suburb community. We hope to establish ourselves among the top builders in our area when it comes to quality and customer satisfaction.
