Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasha Parmeter
Hi Kasha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started in the photography industry as a photographer assistant for a small photography studio in my hometown. I had always loved art, design, and took an interest in photography my senior year of high school. Life took a hard turn, and I found myself at Studio One (the little photography studio) on a temporary basis. I fell in love and caught on so quickly that the owner kept me under her wing for a few years. Teaching me everything about photography from pre session to post, prints and more. I found a love for it. While my opportunity there came to an end when she closed, I bought a camera of my own and kept playing for many years while trying to find my path and what I wanted to do. I then pursued my bachelor’s degree in Multimedia Design and Business Management and worked as a graphic designer at a small business for quite a few years. I was also doing photography on the side for people I knew. Eventually, the on the side became too much. I decided to go full time in 2014 as Gem Photography. In the early 2020’s, I started Creations by Kasha after taking some time off from the photography world… because, burnout… I didn’t run my business wisely. Don’t worry, I learned what I love, and learned to do what makes me happy. So now I mainly focus on babies, kids, families, and senior portraits. This is where I can be more artistic and have more fun with it. My style is a little moodier and lifestyle, I would say. Occasionally, I take on a wedding/elopement because they can be fun. They are not my niche, however, and would prefer babies/families.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I have had to put my business on pause/shift gears a couple of times. The biggest being in 2017 when we had a big family emergency. It took up a lot of my and my husband’s time. I couldn’t show up in the way that I needed to for my business, and that caused it to bottom out. At that time, I decided to go work for JCPenney Portraits as the lead photographer and studio manager. I thought it would be perfect for me, but that is what gave me photographer burnout. Fifteen minutes sessions back-to-back followed by a high-pressure sales pitch… not my cup of tea. I ended up transferring to be a manager elsewhere in JCPenney up until covid, when I furloughed. Covid is what helped me get back into photography.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in newborn to senior portrait photography. I mainly focus on lifestyle photography and have a moodier feel to my images. I have come to be known as a senior portrait photographer in my area. I honestly, didn’t expect this, but I am not mad about it. I just always thought I’d be more family known. I am most proud of my growth as a photographer. While, it hasn’t been easy getting here, I have worked hard and everything I have been through has taught me something to make my business what it is today. I honestly believe what sets me apart from others is my graphic background. This gives me the opportunity to help my clients with more than “just” photography. Which is why I decided to go with Creations by Kasha.
What are your plans for the future?
My future plans are to create a studio space that I can share with other photographers in the area by renting it out. I want to create something that is exactly what I want/need. I mainly use natural light, so it will be a space that will utilize that as much as possible. My husband and I plan to create this space before the end of 2025, if all goes according to plan. However, I have learned that nothing goes as planned. It will be done and ready when it is meant to be.
