Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Lewis
Hi Stephen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out as a musician and music is still a big part of what I do. It allowed me to develop a creative approach and work with a lot of creative people. Music is part of a larger artistic eco-system and when you are releasing albums, performing, and sharing your work, you end up collaborating with graphic designers, videographers, lighting designers… the list goes on. I learned to be really interested in the holistic experience, which lead me to where I am now: running an art and design studio with a lot of my closest collaborators.
There is one other important aspect to how I got here, which is that I like building things, restoring cars, woodworking. For this reason, a lot of my creative work within the business is building installations and environments. It might seem like a far cry from music, but I think all art and craft is somewhat connected.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest work struggle has been getting the extra time to focus on the long-term needs of our company when immediate needs tend to take precedent.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am one of the owners of an art and design studio called Mafic Ocean. We do installations, media, and digital environments for organizations ranging from brands to public institutions like museums. What sets us apart is the artistic edge we bring to our projects. We provide the same level of aesthetic experience to commercial work as we do to an art exhibit, performance, or film.
We have a range of creative talents in our studio. My contribution is in designing spaces and creating installations, as well as general creative direction.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I was reminded by Covid-19 that we are part of the rhythm of nature. We can find peace in that fact, or face peril by losing that perspective.
